See our favourite celebs rock old Hollywood glam »
As holiday soirees are officially beginning to creep into our calendars, it’s time to get serious about cocktail party hair and makeup. Enter the Old Hollywood look—one of our favourites of any season—where retro waves, red lips and bold jewel-toned shades reign supreme. This glamorous look has been around for decades, and we’ve seen it on iconic Hollywood beauties such as Joan Crawford in the ’20s, Rita Hayworth in the ‘40s and again in the ‘50s with Marilyn Monroe’s signature platinum curls. It’s no wonder the look can’t stay off the red carpet for long.
Fast forward to present day and we’re still seeing Hollywood’s leading ladies emulating the look once again. First we have one of our favourite silver screen starlets, Jessica Chastain, who’s signature red carpet look usually entails some silky waves. And then there’s fellow red-haired beauty Amy Adams, also notorious for rocking a glamorous Old Hollywood look on the red carpet, who paired her pinned up hairdo with a coral lip to offset her emerald green drop earrings. Then there’s the swoon-worthy platinum blonde gals like Gwen Stefani and Reese Witherspoon (whose retro look we also loved in Water For Elephants). And most importantly, we can’t forget two of our favourite cover girls, Taylor Swift, who rocked pinned curls and a red lip at the MTV VMA awards, and Lana Del Rey, who has Old Hollywood glamour written all over her.
Take a cue from our favourite celebrities and opt for Old Hollywood beauty this holiday season.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Amy Adams
Amy Adams often rocks an Old Hollywood look on the red carpet. Here she’s paired her pinned up hairdo with a coral lip to offset her emerald green drop earrings.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Blake Lively
We commend Blake Lively, who has frequented this trend on a number of occasions, but made our jaws drop when she finished off her strapless Zuhair Murad beaded gown with matching red lips and nails and Veronica Lake-inspired waves.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Emma Stone
Emma Stone paired her bright yellow gown and diamond choker with crimped waves and pinned back bangs for an elegant look.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain’s signature look is a swipe of colour on her lips and some silky, retro waves.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Lana Del Ray
Lana Del Ray’s large barrel curls and dramatic eye makeup could not be more Old Hollywood.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Lauren Cohan
Nailing this look to a tee is The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohan, who matched her red lips to her striking slip dress and slicked back her curled bob to one side.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Lily Collins
Opting for a darker lip shade to replace the iconic red, we have Lily Collins, who rocked a pinned up hair do with her signature brows earlier this month at the Love Rosie premiere.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Reese Witherspoon
While we often associate Reese with Southern charm, she proves that she can do ultra-glam just as well.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Taylor Swift
One of Swift’s favourite looks, she pulls off a retro curl and bold red lip like nobody’s business.
Celebrity Beauty Old Hollywood Gwen Stefani
Last but certainly not least, Gwen Stefani is a true champion of the Old Hollywood look among today’s pop stars. Remember the It’s My Life video by No Doubt? Classic.
