2016 saw the rebirth of all our favourite (and least favourite) ‘90s trends: slip dresses, crop tops, chokers and visible Calvin Klein underwear to name just a few. Whether it was on the catwalk, or on your favourite Kardashian’s insta feed, iconic 1990s trends were popping up everywhere and on everyone.
But now it’s 2017. And new years are all about looking forward. We (along with a certain Jenner sister!) are looking into the next decade of fashion trends for our throwback inspiration. Cringing already? Us too. But there comes a time when the horrors of our not-so-distant past stop making us squirm and slowly start reappearing in our wardrobes.
You may remember the early 2000s for its gel pens, razor scooters and obsession with all things Avril Lavigne. This is the era that gave us Mean Girls, Wikipedia, The O.C., YouTube and Beyoncé (as a solo artist). It was a time when we boldly lined our lips and strutted proudly in our leggings and UGG boots.
Feeling nostalgic yet? Don’t worry, because here are 10 ’00s trends we might be seeing more of in 2017.
Ed Hardy Shirts
Rhinestones! Cursive! Skull Prints! OH MY! This iconic tattoo-inspired brand is already reappearing on Instagram “It Girls”. (cc: @taylorlashae)
One Shoulder Tops
2016 was all about ’90s inspired off-the-shoulder tops. Maybe in 2017, we’ll add (just one!) ’00s inspired bell sleeve to the look.
Tinted Lenses
Bono is that you? Tinted lenses (in all shapes and colours) were a serious 2002 staple accessory.
Velour Track Suits
We hope you held on to your Juicy Couture! If you didn’t, don’t fret. Vetements is bringing the brand back in their Spring 2017 collection.
Trucker Hats
Justin Bieber AND Kylie Jenner have been spotted sporting this cringe worthy accessory on Instagram. Was it worn ironically? Doesn’t matter – if these megastars are rocking it, others soon will too.
Denim Mini Skirts
Mini, but *NOT* micro. Bonus points if you accessorize with a hot pink BoomBox.
Chunky Studded Belts
Clunky, heavy, and eye-catching. Because you need something substantial to hold up your extra low rise denim.
Fancy Flip Flops
In 2004, there was no occasion too formal for the flip flop. Here’s one trend our feet can get onboard with.
Skinny Scarves
Remember these? This style won’t keep your neck very warm – but fashion isn’t isn’t always about function. Right?
Newsboy Hats
This beret-meets-baseball hat style was a Nicole Richie favourite. Pair it with a popped collar and you’re ready to go.
