15 Rom-Coms That Will Get You in the Valentine’s Day Spirit
by Sarah-Ann MrazekSometimes, we’re made to feel guilty about watching movies that weren’t selected for the Cannes Film Festival, haven’t won any Oscars or aren’t reviewed by critics with a plump, red vegetable. This Valentine’s Day ignore your film snob friends and Rotten Tomatoes’ pretentious critics, and allow yourself to indulge in some cheesy romantic comedies. Maybe, you’ll curl up on the couch with a hot date and an overpriced box of chocolate, or maybe you’ll invite your besties over to roll on the floor laughing after a few too many glasses of Rosé. Maybe, you’ll be spending your V-Day in bed with a tub of ice cream, your cat and a recently broken heart. Whatever your plans, there’s a guilt-free rom-com that will warm your heart with its unapologetic celebration of love. Here’s a list of our favourites:
1/15
50 First Dates (2004)
Getting your crushes attention once is hard enough; imagine having to do it every single day. True love at its finest.
2/15
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger were totally adorable 20 years ago in this cheesy flick. Classic high school drama, grimy house parties and clueless young love. Plus you’ll get a major dose of nostalgia with ’90s grunge apparel, sketchers and your favorite throwback tracks.
3/15
The Other Woman (2014)
Three powerful women you would never find at brunch together, join forces on one revenge mission: to take down the man who was stupid enough to think he could date them all at the same time.
4/15
Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Finding true love is a struggle at every age. From inappropriate teenage fantasies to falling hopelessly in love to re-entering the dating game in your 40’s, this film covers all the ups and downs of relationships. And needless to say, Ryan Gosling’s abs are definitely not photoshopped.
5/15
500 Days Of Summer (2009)
If you’re more into quirky indie films and have a preference for films high on the tomatometer, then look no further, this rom-com scored 85% and is far from your typical love story. Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) hopelessly falls in love with free-spirited, Summer Finn (Zoey Deschanel). Sometimes it’s more about finding yourself than about finding true love.
6/15
He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)
Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper, Ben Afleck, and Jennifer Connely, with a cast like that and a series of messy love triangles, this is the ultimate rom-com.
7/15
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
One of the best things to come out of 2018, Crazy Rich Asians, will have you shook at the insane lifestyle you wish you had. Grab some tissues though, and get ready for waterworks, both happy and sad.
8/15
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Sometimes to move on from your ex you need to totally cut them out of your life. Getting away to Hawaii seems like the perfect escape. Until you find out your ex and her new beau are staying at the same resort and your tropical haven quickly turns to a dreadful nightmare.
9/15
Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008)
Heartbroken bass guitarist, Nick and apathetic cool-girl, Norah’s pretend relationship blossoms into a real one after they spend one night together surviving the grimy after-hours club scene of NYC and bonding over their taste in music. You can bet that the soundtrack is fire.
10/15
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Going to sleep with your makeup on, avoiding any place that resembles a gym, and always dating the wrong guy, we’ve all been there. Bridget Jones, a total hot mess, embarks on a mission to find Mr. Right and unexpectedly finds herself caught between her philandering boss (Hugh Grant) and an ostentatious suitor (Colin Firth).
11/15
The Proposal (2009)
Sometimes you have to do the unimaginable to save your career and sometimes that means faking an engagement, going to Alaska, and falling in love with your hot assistant. Oh and lets not forget Betty White’s hilarious cameo.
12/15
Friends With Benefits (2011)
Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis make for a very attractive couple in this cute rom-com that poses the timeless question: can you be friends with benefits and not catch feelings? The answer is obvious.
13/15
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Before the days of Dallas Buyers Club and The Lincoln Lawyer, Matthew McConaughey starred in his fair share of cheesy romcoms. Even though the end is totally predictable and has some problematic assumptions about gender roles, it will still have you giggling at the silly back and forth between the lead characters.
14/15
Sixteen Candles (1984)
A classic Brat Pack flick that delves into the ups and downs of teenage life in the ’80s. Having your family forget your b-day and things not going as planned with your crush can seem like the end of the world at age 16. This flick induces loads of laughter and nostalgia, but also has us relieved that our high school days are behind us.
15/15
Knocked Up (2007)
It’s hard to find a comedy that even had the harshest of film critics laughing, but this one had them ranting and raving. A very honest portrayal of an unplanned conception after a messy one-night-stand between two seemingly incompatible individuals and endless witty jokes, it’s no wonder this rom-com is an instant favourite.
