3 Vitamin C Cocktails That’ll Cure Your Winter Blues

With the holiday bills, fewer daylight hours and the cold that you just can’t seem to shake off, January doesn’t tend to be anyone’s favourite month. While sitting on the couch and sulking may be tempting, the easiest way to get over the winter blues is to make sure you’re getting a good dose of vitamin C every day. So with the help of Sunkist, which was in town to host a tasting event at Toronto’s hottest new plant-based restaurant Planta, we learned tips and tricks on how to incorporate the nutrient into our diet—via cocktails. While alcoholic beverages may not be the ideal remedy for your common cold (some may beg to differ), these citrus drinks will be the perfect pick-me-ups this weekend. Mother Meyer

Ingredients:
1 ounce freshly-squeezed Sunkist® Meyer lemon juice
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce elderflower liqueur
1/4 ounce ginger syrup
2 ounces sparkling wine
Dehydrated Sunkist® Meyer lemon

Method: Pour Sunkist® Meyer lemon juice, vodka, elderflower liqueur and ginger syrup into shaker, then shake for 10 seconds. Pour into coupe glass and top with sparkling wine. Garnish with dehydrated Sunkist® Meyer lemon.

Virgin Meyer

Ingredients:
1 ½ ounces freshly squeezed Sunkist® Meyer lemon juice
3/4 ounce elderflower cordial
1/4 ounce ginger syrup
Dehydrated Sunkist® Meyer lemon

Method: Pour Sunkist® Meyer lemon juice, elderflower cordial and ginger syrup into shaker, shake for 10 seconds. Pour into coupe glass, and garnish with dehydrated Sunkist® Meyer lemon.

Blood Hound

Ingredients:
1 ounce freshly-squeezed Sunkist® pummelo juice
1/2 ounce spiced Moro blood orange cordial, made with freshly-squeezed Sunkist® Moro blood orange juice (see recipe below)
1 ounce tequila
1/2 ounce Aperol
1 ounce rooibos tea, chilled
Flamed Sunkist® blood orange zest for garnish

Method: In a shaker, add Sunkist® pummelo juice, spiced Moro blood orange cordial, tequila, Aperol and chilled rooibos tea. Shake for 10 seconds, then pour into rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a flamed Sunkist® Moro blood orange zest.

Ingredients for spiced Moro blood orange cordial (500 ml):
Zest and juice of 4 Sunkist® Moro blood oranges
300 grams of sugar
1 6-inch cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon of salt

Method: Combine all ingredients in a small pot and bring to a boil. Turn down to medium and simmer for 20 minutes, then strain. Spiced Sunkist® Moro blood orange cordial can last in your fridge for up to four weeks.

Oil & Wine

Ingredients:
1 ½ ounces gin
1 ½ ounces sweet vermouth
1/4 ounce Sunkist® Olio Sacrum (includes Sunkist® pummelos and Sunkist® Meyer lemons)
Garnish with Sunkist® pummelo twist

Method: Pour all ingredients into shaker and stir 40 times. Pour into coupe glass and garnish with Sunkist® pummelo twist.

Ingredients for Sunkist Olio Sacrum (250 ml):
Zest of 2 Sunkist® pummelos
Zest of 6 Sunkist® Meyer lemons
Zest of 6 Sunkist® limes
Equal weight in sugar (e.g. if all zest weighs X amount, add that much sugar)

Method: In Ziplock or vacuum-sealed bag, add all ingredients. Let sit until citrus oils have mixed with sugar to form a syrup (roughly 48 hours in a Ziplock or 24 hours in vacuum-sealed bag).
