4 minutes with Willow Smith, Chanel’s latest It girl
Just after today’s Fall 2016 show, Chanel revealed its latest brand ambassadress, Willow Smith. By looking at her, you’d know that she’s the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, but what you might not know is that she’s one of the most influential voices of Generation Z. And while Chanel and Smith might seem like strange bedfellows, in a world where luxury must constantly redefine its rarity, Smith is right on the money. After all, she’s nothing but a rare bird—she’s a 15-year-old with a platinum single under her belt, a Hollywood super-spawn whose brand of weirdness doesn’t echo either of her famous parents, and a girl who actually likes hanging out with brother. I got the VVVIP opportunity to speak to Willow for exactly three minutes and 58 seconds, and within that short time, her coolness shone through just as brightly as her cobalt liner. Welcome to the world of haute couture, baby girl.
So how’s it going?
It’s going amazing. That was my first Chanel show. Beautiful experience. All the clothes are just so specifically crafted and you can tell there is just so much care put into their design.
What was your favourite outfit?
I saw Kendall wearing this pale pink crop dress with a skirt that flared out at the mid-thigh and it was so beautiful. That was one of my favourites.
How did you pick out your outfit today? I really dig the outfit.
I went to Chanel’s apartment and I got a huge tour with some history and it was so amazing. There’s a little fitting room in the apartment so I just went in there and picked out some stuff.
Speaking of Chanel’s history, she was one of the first people to liberate women…
If it wasn’t for her, we’d probably still be wearing skirts and corsets.
And sitting sidesaddle.
Yeah, totally.
How do you see Chanel in a 2016 context?
I feel like she was never a conventional woman. And nowadays more and more people are starting to become more comfortable with their unconventional-ness. And I feel like she really inspires us to step out of our shell and to just express ourselves in ways that used to be condemned.
You’re a poster girl for being unconventional and digging your own individuality.
Totally!
First of all, what do you think about that in general?
I feel like every generation brings something new to the world. And I feel like being yourself and being okay with who are as a person now more than ever is becoming a trend. Chanel really embodies the truth of loving yourself and being the person you really want to be.
Second of all, how do you see your role in that?
I feel like too many people on earth feel like they have to confine to certain molds and I feel like my purpose in this life is to really just show that no matter who you are or where you come from or no matter what people think about you, you still got to go for what you want and be strategic and smart about it. Because I feel like adults don’t really respect this generation because they think we’re lazy and we’re always on our phones and we’re always being somewhere else, and it’s like, no. What we need to show the world as a generation of the 21st century is that no we’re smart and we’re going to take our knowledge and apply it in ways you thought we couldn’t. And we’re going to get educated and we’re going to get what we want.
Damn, girl.
