With its late-season snow and view of the Rocky Mountains, April is the perfect time to visit Canmore, Alberta. The spring break crowds thin out and high season rates ease up. Though it’s a sleepy mountain town at heart, Canmore is fast becoming a year-round retreat for sporty weekend warriors and outdoor aficionados alike. It was the star backdrop for the Oscar-winning film The Revenant, and interestingly enough, boasts more Olympic athletes per capita than anywhere else in Canada. When Friday rolls around, those in the know visit from neighbouring cities so they can decompress, dine and move.

Explore
While the rest of the country lingers impatiently between winter and spring, Canmore basks in its snowy idyll (minus the bone-chilling temperatures) well into April. Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a mom and pop dogsledding company, offers packages that include a cozy stopover in a teepee, where hot chocolate is served and fire-heated bannock is dipped in maple syrup.
