5 Beauty Products You Can Steal From Your Dude
A few months ago, Kylie Jenner revealed one of her favourite moisturizing primers (particularly for oily skin). Maybe you’re not someone who spends a lot of time thinking about Kylie Jenner’s skincare routine, but I certainly am. So imagine my disappointment surprise when her recommendation wasn’t a chic and expensive product that I could then justify purchasing. The 18-year-old’s go-to? Nivea Men Post-Shave Balm. My wallet is rejoicing, btw.
It’s not that I dislike Nivea (quite the contrary, actually; the lip balm is my desert island product.) It’s just that the aftershave has been sitting on my boyfriend’s bathroom sink for ages and I’ve never looked twice at it. My spiral into embarrassment continued when, after doing some research, I found out that every makeup artist, YouTube star and product review community board has at one point or another recommended the balm as a primer. FML. SMH. Anyway, since the balm has glycerine in it, it works extremely well as a primer, because the ingredient basically makes anything you put on top of it (i.e. foundation) cling to it for dear life.
So that got me thinking about what other products I could stop buying and just start borrowing (fine, stealing) instead. Below are four other products that you should be shopping in the men’s aisle for and/or taking from your boyfriend/husband/BFF/dad.
1. Razors
First let’s address the obvious: razors. Okay wait, let’s address the (hopefully) even more obvious: do not use the razor they are currently using. Great. So, men’s razors have more blades that are tightly packed (a design that’s meant for shaving thick, coarse hair), and will therefore give you a closer shave. Simple as that. I like the Gilette Mach 3 Razor ($12, Well.ca).
2. Hair products
Giving up your shampoo and conditioner for his might be taking you way outside your comfort zone (especially if you have curly hair and need products that cater to your curls) but when it comes to mousse, wax or putty, there’s really no reason you can’t use men’s. The ingredients are more likely than not the same, and men’s hair products are usually cheaper than women’s, so go nuts.
Try Dove Men +Care Define & Strong Hold Fortifying Styling Gel ($10, Well.ca)
3. Deodorant
This was a big one among all the women I asked. Some use their BF/husband’s deodorant (usually Old Spice) because they like the smell, some (like me) use it because of the cool gel texture, and some use it because it’s more heavy-duty than women’s deodorant.
Old Spice High Endurance Long Lasting Deodorant ($4.80, Well.ca)
4. Hair oil
This is only applicable if your guy has a beard, but if he does, his beard oil makes a great hair oil for you. Use it post-shower, or on dried strands to bring dull hair back to life. Can’t believe you never thought of this one? Same.
Province Apothecary’s Beard Oil is a great option. ($36, provinceapothecary.com)
