Skincare is ever-evolving, much like our hair habits and makeup routines. In the beauty game, there isn’t a month that goes by without a new ingredient, treatment or product for us to fawn over. With endless promises of overnight rejuvenation and instant brightening results, the hype can sometimes be more alluring than the innovation itself. Truth be told, it’s often the skincare ingredients that are already cult faves in other countries that are hailed as the heroes over here.
These hero ingredients often take a backseat to the performance players we know and love most simply because we’re unaware they exist. So in order to stay ahead of the curve, we’ve dissected 5 ingredients you probably never knew existed, but should probably get familiar with. Meet the power players that are packing a punch, reversing signs of sun damage and dehydration, all the while restoring your complexion to a place that resembles your high school yearbook photo. From starfish extract to blue tansy, these are ingredients you’ll want to get to know on a personal basis.

Starfish extract
This seaside treasure can now be found in some of the latest South Korean beauty products, and for good reason. The extract boasts anti-microbial effects and contains skin-whitening materials that could reduce the melanin production in your cells.
Starfish extract also has anti-inflammatory effects and has the potential to heal wounds and scars. Expect to see brighter and smoother skin, as products containing this extract are packed with vitamins and collagen.
And while wondrous in many regards, the downside is that this ingredient is not entirely cruelty-free, making it an absolute no-go for animal enthusiasts.

Maple tree sap
This ingredient is not to be confused with the delicious syrup you just had in your latte. Maple tree sap is power packed with peptides and calcium, which will help to hydrate the skin better than your best body butter. This is because tree sap molecules are smaller than water molecules, allowing them to absorb more rapidly and deeper into the dermis.
What’s so interesting is that this adored skincare ingredient also doubles as a health drink in South Korea, as it can cure hangovers and hydrate like no other. The revitalizing nutrients packed inside deliver maximum results because it’s one of the most purified forms of liquids we can harvest.
It spends quality time soaking up nutrients in the tree before becoming a blend in the latest and greatest night creams. Additionally, this hydrating, acne-combatting and quick absorbing ingredient is odourless and won’t leave any greasy film post application. We’re thinking this potent product will be giving Argan and coconut oil a run for their money.

Moringa oil
This new hero on the oil block is being praised for it’s potent properties, but has actually been used for both beauty and health purposes for centuries. Dubbed the “Tree of Life,” this bountiful oil is also a food source and can treat everything from malnutrition to hyperpigmentation. The powerful product is cultivated in Thailand, and can thrive in harsh environments including drought.
It’s the muted yellow seeds in the tree that are pressed to create a non-drying oil that boasts a high concentration of fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E just to name a few. What’s more is that it has a shelf life of five years, making it a great bargain buy for those on a skincare budget.
And if slathered onto your strands, your hair will retain the soft floral fragrance all while looking and feeling stronger than your last session with a leave-in.
If used daily, Moringa oil can combat wrinkles and sun damage, boost collagen production and treat dermatitis and eczema. And finally, this cure-all can rectify rashes and banish blackheads and blemishes for good.

Cupuacu butter
This tropical tree hails from the Amazon rainforest and boasts the ability to easily absorb and thoroughly moisturize the skin better than your luxury lotion. The butter consists of fatty acids, plant polyphenols and sterols that can all contribute to your overall glow.
Cupuacu can also attract 240% more water, making it an effective skin plumper and softener when used regularly. And while not considered an SPF, it has been known to absorb harmful UVA/UVB rays, while keeping the skin safe from dark spots and uneven pigmentation.
This butter can also combat environmental stressors including pollution, which can all contribute to breakouts and a lackluster complexion. If we haven’t convinced you enough, perhaps you should know that this elixir could also help your skin restore lost elasticity. Talk about killing a million birds with one stone.

Blue tansy oil
This mystical flower is actually poisonous if ingested, but works wonders when extracted and harvested for medicinal purposes. The mysterious oil is genetically quite similar to Chamomile, which is popular in many calming skincare remedies. But of course it’s the distinctive blue colour that separates the two, and for good reason.
The moody hue is derived from a chemical found inside, which helps combat inflammation. Blue Tansy is also rich in antibacterial and antihistamine properties, making it a must-have ingredient for those with sensitive skin.
Additionally, it houses antimicrobial properties, which will work wonders for those with itchy or irritated skin and can readily remedy a flaky scalp. Tansy will also work hard for those with surfaced blood vessels and other visible skin conditions including rosacea.
And while not mainstream at the moment, the potent floral scent will have first time users either caught off guard or completely transfixed. So if you’re willing to give it a whirl, expect to see reduced redness and a radiant glow.
