5 of fall TV’s biggest fashion icons + how to get their looks
by Sarah CasselmanNow that it’s officially fall, it’s time to grab a blanket, a bottle of wine and a little body heat (person or pet will do just fine) and participate in everyone’s favourite cold weather indoor sport: binge-watching TV. If Sex and the City taught us anything (besides the fact that a writer can somehow have an unlimited designer clothing budget…) it’s that characters’ sartorial choices are just as important as their story lines.
As the new season of TV shows starts to heat up, expect an army of stylish women—familiar faces, like Scandal’s Kerry Washington, and new ones to watch (literally) like Blood & Oil’s Amber Valletta—to march across your flat screen or laptop when the sun goes down. Sure, the acting commands attention but the fashion and beauty looks recruited for these shows provide enough ammo to keep us dreaming all week long about these style muses and their fabulous, fictitious closets. Take a page from five of TV’s hottest leading ladies and wake up your wardrobe small screen style. Let the bears hibernate—you’ll be too busy painting the town red this season.
Get some style inspo from Fall 2015’s biggest TV fashion icons.

Known for her big cat prints, bling and bold lip colour, Empire‘s Cookie Lyon serves up street chic with a side of sass. Sure, she’s spent time in the Big House but her designer looks say haute not hardened. All hail the Queen.

Like most of Kappa Kappa Tau girls, Ariana Grande’s Scream Queens character Chanel No. 2 has an affinity for all things pink. A nod to her flair for the dramatic (see: her text battle with the Red Devil), metallics and statement accessories also make a cameo in her sorority sister wardrobe.

Sure, Broad City‘s Ilana Wexter isn’t your typical fashion icon, but with a wardrobe made up exclusively of crop tops and cage bras (or so it seems), we can’t help but be tempted by her YOLO attitude to dressing. From the office to da club, Ilana’s wardrobe remains pretty consistent, which we love. Not even T.Swift can rock a crop quite like this. Yas Queen, indeed.

As we enter season 4 of Nashville, the great Rayna James‘s love life is finally where it should be, but professionally, and musically? Things are shakier than ever. Her upstart label Highway 65 has been called a “vanity project” thanks to three high profile fails. So now Rayna has to put her own music on hold to save the label.
That means she’ll have to reduce the low-cut sequined dresses that are meant for the road in favour of record label doyenne threads. To woo talent, and stay relevant in the music business, Rayna should divine Isabel Marant’s rock chic vibe. Think easy subliminal messaging blouses (star-printed) from Zara with Saint Laurent’s retro-cowboy booties, and edgy Jin Soon nails in Cantata. Get out there and save Highway 65, Rayna.

Amber Valletta stars as Carla Briggs on ABC’s new prime time drama, Blood & Oil, which delves into the rich and scandalous lives of modern-day oil tycoons in North Dakota (think Dallas meets Gossip Girl). The much younger wife of head honcho in town Hap Briggs, Carla is a well-established woman working in finance, with the no-nonsense wardrobe to match—which isn’t to say that she’s not incredibly sexy and super luxe. Pencil skirts, silk blouses, statement jewellery, and glamorous gowns are all part of this maven’s oeuvre. Sounds to us like Claire Underwood with a honky-tonk twist. Giddy up!
