7 Times Jennifer Lawerence Shook the Internet as a 27-Year-Old
This past year, Jennifer Lawerence found love, hosted a talk show and went on a press tour promoting her new film Red Sparrow — meaning, of course, that the oh-so-relatable actress candidly said/did a number of gasp-worthy things that landed her name in the headlines. And now, in honour of the veteran Chill It Girl™ becoming one year older, we’ve rounded up her best 27-year-old rag-mag worthy moments for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!
She acquired an art-guy boyfriend with a meme-able name
What is a Cooke Maroney? The people of the Internet had many thoughts on J.Law’s new art gallerist beau — or, more specifically, thoughts on his name. (Example: “You know how on The Good Wife and Law and Order, when they don’t want to pay to use the name of a big, IRL company, they make up their own brands? Google in The Good Wife is called Chumhum and Facebook in the Law and Order universe is called FaceUnion? Anyway, Cooke Maroney sounds like the Law and Order version of like Ben Mulroney.”)
She was “rude” to Joanna Lumley at the BAFTAs
At the 2017 BAFTAs, iconic British actress Joanna Lumley introduced Lawrence to the stage by describing her as “the hottest actress on the planet.” Lawrence responded to her compliment with: “that was a bit much.” Britain — a nation whose mass sense of humour is often described as sarcastic and self-deprecating — did not get the joke. The country was not a fan of this American A-list actress seemingly “throwing shade” at their 71-year-old idol.
With British Twitter threatening to kick her out of their country, Lawrence had no choice but to respond.
Jennifer Lawrence reveals the truth behind THAT Joanna Lumley BAFTAs drama: 'I emailed her and I was like, 'I am so, so sorry. If you want to come
over to my hotel before Tuesday and just punch me in the face, please!''#BAFTAs #JenniferLawrence #JoannaLumley pic.twitter.com/Xl0N7lZlmu— Lorraine (@lorraine) February 21, 2018
She declared her thirst for Timothée Chalamet
Like every other living, breathing human who’s seen Call Me By Your Name, Lawrence is thirsty for Timothée Chalamet. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress and Kardashian expert called the Oscar-nominated star “so, so talented and hot!” Which, same. Is there anything more relatable than crushing on Timothée Chalamet? (She also joked to the cameras: “I’m waiting for him to get a little bit older, you know? [I’m] buttering him up like a pig for slaughter, and then I’m going to swing right in there as soon as he’s, like, 30.” How romantic.)
She didn’t want to wear a jacket
Like the micro-managing mother of a small child, the world erupted in outrage when Lawrence stepped out for a photo call in chilly London without a coat on. Standing sleeveless in the middle of four jacket-wearing gents, the impression was that the actress was forced to show her skin, because “sexism.”
But Lawrence was quick to respond to the concern for her warmth. “Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this ‘Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold’ controversy,” she posted to her Facebook page. “This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice. This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Overreacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THAT’S MY CHOICE TOO!”
She “claimed” she was giving up acting for activism
In the midst of promoting Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence boldly claimed that she’s taking a year off acting to “fix our democracy.” She told Entertainment Tonight: “I’m going to be working with this organization as a part of Represent.Us … trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.”
But her Hollywood hiatus didn’t last long. A few days later, a rep for the actress clarified to Entertainment Weekly that Lawrence will go back to work when any of the several projects she’s already got lined up goes into production. According to her IMDB, this line-up includes an untitled film with Amy Schumer, Ron Howard’s Zelda Fitzgerald biopic Zelda, Adam McKay’s Bad Blood, and Luca Guadagnino’s Burial Rites.
She proved herself as shockingly good investigative reporter
I’m going to come out and say it: Lawrence should retire from acting, forget about that whole activism thing, and get her own late night show. When subbed in to host Jimmy Kimmel Live with Kardashian West as her guest, and she got right into the nitty gritty. Lawrence barely gave Kardashian West a chance to catch her breath before firing off her first question: “Do you think it’s a coincidence that Reggie Bush’s wife looks just like you? I don’t.” (Hey, she’s not wrong.)
A natural, amiright? Her journalism skills look good on paper too: for Elle‘s September cover, Lawrence interviewed her longtime BFF Emma Stone. It’s a great interview, and J.Law delivers some excellent questions. When Stone calls her out on this, Lawrence humbly responds: “I know; I’m a great interviewer.”
She climbed over chair at the Oscars, wine in hand
Bow down to Hollywood’s queen of reliability: I’ve never actually climbed over anything in a sequinned Dior Couture gown with a glass of wine in my hand — and you probably haven’t either. But as someone who has side-stepped over a chair because I was too lazy to shuffle to the end of the row, I can relate.

This is the stuff the Internet lives for. Cheers to another year of you, J.Law. ?
