The 88th Academy Awards were full of awkward moments (Stacey Dash and Sam Smith…), gorgeous gowns and star-studded talent.
And with some major wins including Brie Larson’s first piece of golden hardware, to Leonardo DiCaprio’s full super-meme glory finally coming into fruition, Oscar night could have not been more perfect.
And while our eyes were fixed on the main prize, we couldn’t help but notice a major red carpet trend that was spotted on eight stunning attendees. If you’re anything like us (and we know you are), you definitely noticed the slew of celebs who chose to match their makeup to their dresses.
From Tina Fey to our ultimate girl crush Margot Robbie and everyone’s BFF Jennifer Lawrence, we’re breaking down these matchy-matchy moments. So next time you’re headed out for that girl’s night, make sure you’re matching your makeup to your dress, rather than your manicure.

Tina Fey
Tina opted to match her makeup to her gown in order to separate herself from the red carpet crowd. On her lids she went for a striking purple liner and lid combo that perfectly enhanced her brown eyes. The strapless Versace gown literally slayed, and her high-fashion Bulgari jewels solidified the actress as a style force to be reckoned with.

Charlize Theron
Is it just us, or does Mad Max’s Charlize Theron always outdo herself? This year, she showed up in a striking red Dior creation that broke the traditional ball gown dress code and probably the internet. Complete with a mini train and a plunging neckline, Charlize effortlessly stole the pre-game show. To top it off, she paired her smoky eyes to her dress, which not only anchored her look, but added a splash of colour to an otherwise muted makeup look.

Brie Larson
Brie dazzled in a royal blue ruffled Gucci gown that was made just for the Oscar winner. Topped with a pearl-encrusted belt with an almost raspberry hued centre piece, the ultra-femme design played into her delicate beauty look. Rather than lining her lids in a smoldering dark hue, Brie went with a tiny touch of blue to match her gown. To finish the look, she went with a half-up, half-down hairstyle that was playful yet sophisticated.

Chrissy Teigen
Mom-to-be Chrissy can do no wrong, so when she showed up the Oscars with an epic messy braid and a magnificent baby bump, we were simply stunned. Chrissy opted for a nude-illusion red gown by Marchesa, and matched her almost muted beauty look to boot. Between her radiant glow, striking skin tone highlights and perfectly mastered smize, our fave beauty moment has to go to our favourite silly supermodel.

Margot Robbie
Of course Margot looked like a golden goddess at last night’s Oscar awards. The 25-year-old actress opted for a plunging snakeskin Tom Ford gown that paired perfectly with her hair and complexion. To keep her beauty look on point, and on trend, Margot went with a muted and nude colour palette. Complete with a flesh coloured mouth and soft smokey eyes with a touch of glittery gold liner, the casual yet cool makeup look played as the perfect canvas for her steal-the-show worthy wardrobe.

Rachel McAdams
Rachel’s backless August Getty Atelier dress was nothing short of spectacular. Of course the magic didn’t end there, because after further inspection we noticed a hint of glittery skin, smokey eyes and striking emerald eyeliner to top off her already picture-perfect outfit. With her makeup on the minimal side, her smoldering eyes only enhanced one of her best features.

Jennifer Lawrence
J. Law never fails to show up a stunning Dior number, and this red carpet proved no different. Jennifer dazzled in a sheer black lace gown complete with a plunging neckline (apparently another huge trend from last night). The actress also donned a sleek blonde bob and black and nude smokey eyes to pair perfectly with the black feathers and dramatic design of her dress.

Olivia Munn
Olivia looked like a radiant bright light in a sea of safe shades. She completed her look with a pop of orange on her mouth, and pared-down hair to keep her look balanced and beautiful. And while orange might be a bit more daring for the Hollywood crowd, we have to give credit where it’s definitely due.
