A Balmain x L’Oréal Lipstick Collection is Coming
Get ready, everyone, because #Balmania is coming to the makeup world.
Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing is teaming up with L’Oréal Paris to create a collection of lipsticks set to launch Sept. 20 (just before Paris Fashion Week, where L’Oréal Paris is one of the major sponsors).
“L’Oréal Paris and Balmain share the same strong vision of femininity and the same goal, to empower women and offer them diverse ways to express themselves,” Rousteing said in a statement. “With this collaboration, I’m thrilled to make this idea tangible for every woman around the world.”
According to WWD, there will be 12 lipsticks available in three new colour themes (Rock, Couture and Glamazone), all in L’Oréal’s cult Color Riche formula. Vogue reports each shade is inspired by and named after a model in Rousteing’s #BalmainArmy.
“Lara [Stone], with her incredible blonde hair and her attitude as well, has to have a red lip because she is the femme fatale,” Rousteing told Vogue, adding Soo Joo Park’s lippie is a gem-like violet, while Ysaunny Brito’s is a shade of safari green.
“She, to me, is my Amazon, the girl that’s going to fight and [be] strong and powerful,” Olivier said of Brito.
Additionally, there will be a wearable lipstick “jewel edition” necklace showcasing three of the star shades (Park and Brito’s shades, along with Doutzen Kroes’ rose gold shade), which features a lipstick pendant embellished with a gold tassel. It will be carried exclusively in Balmain in Balmain stores, plus a few other retailers (the regular collection will be available wherever L’Oréal Paris is already sold).
Along with overseeing the creative direction of the new hues, Rousteing has also been involved in the packaging design, which consists of emerald-green malachite, blue lapis lazuli and onyx-inspired tubes. “If Balmain is going to do lipstick, we have to make it the most exquisite possible,” he explained to Vogue. And of course, Olivier was involved in the Nico Bustos-shot advertising campaign, which features 12 diverse models including Ming Xi, Cindy Bruna, Neelam Gill and Alexina Graham, each of them sporting one of the lipstick shades.
This collaboration marks Rousteing’s first official foray into the makeup world and follows his successful Balmain haircare line and fragrance collection. It is the first collaboration the French fashion house has done since its wildly successful Balmain x H&M partnership, and judging by the Balmania that created, we have a feeling that this lipstick collection will sell out fast (especially if Olivier’s famous friends show their support, too).
The L’Oréal Paris x Balmain Paris capsule lipstick collection launches Sept. 20 at Barneys, barneys.com, and lorealparisusa.com. Each shade will retail for $14.
