A night at the AGO

Today, we’ve got a guest blogger: FASHION’s editor-in-chief, Ceri Marsh

On Tuesday night, Toronto’s fashion and art crowd were like kids let loose in a toy store at the new AGO. We were greeted by white clad “angels” handing out small mirrors we’d need later to participate in Terence Koh’s performance piece. We were then whisked upstairs to the Baillie Court reception space. So beautiful! Guests entered a fairy tale forest, with origami cranes and candles fluttering in branches placed on every table.

Everyone in Toronto has been buzzing about their first glimpses of the AGO—Frank Gehry’s update has only been open a couple of weeks—but Tuesday’s chic crew was also witnessing another unveiling: Amex’s Centurion card, which has now come to Canada. To get your hot little hands on the super-luxe black card, as it’s known, you must be invited by American Express. AGO’s director Matthew Teitelbaum teased the guests, “I think you’re here because you have the highest credit card balances in the country.”

After a simple, yet elegant meal prepared by Frank’s Anne Yarymowich we were invited to traipse through the Richters, Dzamas and Goodwins in the galleries below. The biggest luxury of the night were the artist-guided tours—playing docents were artists Ed Pien, Evan Penny and Anitra Hamilton.
