According to Kanye West’s Instagram, Iconic Relationships Rarely End in Happiness
In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Kanye West returned from a nine-month social media hiatus to turn his Instagram feed into a celebrity couple Hall of Fame. Because apparently, nothing quite spells romance like spending several hours on your phone posting photos.
Ye posted 52 pics of iconic couples from pop culture’s past and present, ending the photo spam with two photos of him and his wife of four years, Kim Kardashian. Seems pretty romantic right? But upon deeper analysis, there’s something a little strange about the extravagant social media gesture — and we’re not just talking about the fact that he “forgot” to include Jay-Z and Beyonce.
Only 12 of the 52 relationships Kanye showcased are still going strong. And even most of the couples who didn’t choose to consciously uncouple ended in tragedy: JFK, Biggie Smalls, John Lennon, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Kurt Cobain all passed away in the midst of their memorable romances. Then there’s couples like Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston — and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — whose relationships ended in highly publicized divorce. Other couples volatility was part of their public legend; Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, who made the list, physically and verbally abused one another while they were together. (Fictional Sex and the City couple Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big snuck in there too, even though we know he’s wrong for her and she totally should have ended up with Aidan.)
So what exactly is Kanye West trying to say to his wife? Because, according to my deductive reasoning, there’s only a 23% chance that iconic celebrity couples won’t end in break-up. Browse through Kanye’s digital mood board below, and observe the unlikelihood of iconic, long-term relationship happiness for yourself.
