Adidas and Parley Team Up to Tackle Marine Pollution
Last week a pilot whale was found struggling to swim in a canal in Thailand. The animal was quickly surrounded by people who attempted to help, but the damage had already been done. There was 17 pounds of plastic choking its stomach.
Five days later the whale died, having consumed over 80 plastic bags and other pieces of plastic debris.
Tomorrow is World Oceans Day and Adidas and Parley have teamed up to tackle the growing issue of marine plastic pollution.
Parley is a collective that raises awareness about the fragility of our oceans. They’ve chosen to collaborate with Adidas to raise money to fund a school in the Maldives, where an environmental education program will educate and empower kids to become the next generation of ocean guardians.
Money will be raised through Run For The Oceans, a running movement that hopes to raise global awareness about these issues. Adidas will match every kilometre run with $1 US for the first one million kilometres. Tomorrow marks the start of the month-long running challenge.
To join the movement, download the Runtastic app, add yourself to do the Run For The Oceans group and start logging your kilometres. Runners can also join Adidas ambassadors in cities across the world, with runs taking place in LA, New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Barcelona, Milan and Shanghai.
In addition, Adidas and Parley are also releasing limited edition versions of the ULTRABoost Parley and ULTRABoost X. These shoes are made from up-cycled waste, taken from the shores of coastal communities. Their goal is to repurpose the plastic before it reaches the ocean, therefore preventing more wildlife from being affected by our waste.
Each pair of shoes saves around 11 plastic bottles from ending up in the ocean.
