Afternoon beauty fix: Stop a last-minute fleck of mascara from ruining an otherwise perfect makeup application

What am I supposed to do when I finish off a perfect eye-makeup application with a mistaken touch from my mascara wand? Black smudges ruin it every time!
It’s so typical that only when you’re halfway through your shadow application do you realize it may have been practical to apply your mascara first to avoid this inevitable flub. And since super lengthening and volumizing formulas have become en vogue, I swear it’s doubly difficult to avoid a dollop of the black wax. Personal experience has taught me that the best way out of this situation is with a cotton swab and makeup remover, though not all formulations are the same. Some oilier versions will not only remove the dab of mascara but the majority of your eyeshadow too—while also leaving a nice shiny streak of clean skin in their wake. A gentler formula, like Nars Makeup Removing water ($30, at narscosmetics.ca), which has neither soap, alcohol, oil, or fragrance in its formula, will do the trick gently and leave your lids free of mascara.
