Alexander McQueen: A suitable tribute
The invitation that has New York fashion lovers waiting by the mailbox is that of tonight’s Costume Institute’s Met Gala. This year’s extravaganza opens the exhibition Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (May 4 to July 31, metmuseum.org), which encompasses everything from McQueen’s Central Saint Martins post-graduate collection of 1992 to his final presentation, which was shown days after his death.
If you can’t make it across the border to the show (or your gala invitation got lost in the mail), consolation may be found in the accompanying book of the same title. Inside, there are new photographs by Sølve Sundsbø, an introduction from The Independent fashion editor Susannah Frankel and an interview by Tim Blanks with Sarah Burton, the new creative director for Alexander McQueen. Special-edition copies feature a holographic cover, perhaps a nod to Kate Moss’s ghostly appearance on McQueen’s Fall 2006 runway.
