From a Met Costume Institute exhibit earlier this year to FASHION’s current cover girl, it’s clear that punk is trending. All year round, designers like Saint Laurent, Rodarte, Jean Paul Gaultier and Junya Watanabe embraced rebellion with biker jackets and grungy accoutrements. Donatella Versace went head over heels for the trend for Fall 2013, even coining her own version called “Vunk” (Versace + punk ) for her Fall 2013 Versace collection which featured form-fitting vinyl pants, heavy chained necklaces and a nod to Gianni’s legendary safety pins.
It’s with Donatella’s fall collection in mind that we created our latest DIY, a pair of chain-link leather gloves. They’ll provide ample warmth, attitude and another reason to use the word “Vunk.”

SUPPLIES:
-Leather gloves ($25 at H&M)
-Chain ($10 at Hi Beads)
-Black thread
-Pliers

STEP ONE:
Place your metal rings on the glove and decide where you want your chains to start. Make sure they don’t start too high or low. We placed our rings right next to the seam just so we get as much chain on our gloves as we can. Once you have decided where you want your rings to be, thread your needle and tie a knot at the back. Once you are ready, start sewing your rings onto your gloves. Make sure you do a couple of passes because you want to make sure the ring is on tight so the chains don’t pull them off.

STEP TWO:
After your rings are on, lie out your chain and decide how you want them on the gloves. Have fun layering them, using different sizes and changing up the lengths of each chain.

STEP THREE:
Once you are ready, start by measuring the right amount of chain that you will need and open the first link on the chain and attach it to the ring.

STEP FOUR:
After that, open the last chain link from your measured piece and attach it to your other ring. Remember to press hard to insure that the chain links are closed so they don’t come off. Keep repeating these last two steps until you are happy with your gloves. Remember to have fun and play around with different shapes, sizes and colours. Make sure you aren’t putting too much weight on the rings so they don’t fall off.
If you like, you can use a pair of sharp scissors and cut of the fingers on your gloves. We decided to keep the fingers on for our colder chilly Toronto winters.
