This week, our dreams took flight we learned that Empire was getting a nail polish line. Available next month at Sephora and Nordstrom, Deborah Lippmann collab will consist of shades called “Hustle Hard” (a shimmery fuchsia), Power of Empire (gold glitter), and War of the Roses (a crimson shimmer), which are all meant to reflect aspects of Cookie Lyon’s personality/aesthetic.
“I was mostly inspired by Cookie when creating the colours,” Lippmann said. “I wanted them to complement her powerful and assertive wardrobe as well as make a statement on their own.” Which they do. And of course, they also made us wish that all our beloved TV shows were launching nail polishes that we could channel our favourite characters with. Therefore, we created a list — nay, a proposal– of other TV shows and characters that should have nail polish lines. And what those shades should be, of course.
So thank us if/when you find yourself eventually wearing a nail polish inspired by Olivia Pope.

Show: Scream Queens
Colours: Pastel pink, blue, yellow, and green
While Chanel #1 would like us to think she’s the only character worth a nail polish line, it’d be a disservice to the sorority as a whole to leave out the rest of the palette that makes up their wardrobes. Which, of course, are all still approved by . . . Chanel. Damn it.

Show: Broad City
Colours: Electric blue, black, lime green
Considering Abbi shelled out top dollar for her token bandage dress, it’d be a legitimate crime not to interpret it as a nail polish tone. Meanwhile, Ilana’s flair for green warrants its own colour, while black is functional for everything from birthdays to finding counterfeit purses.
tv-shows-nail-polish-03
Show: The Good Wife
Colours: Burgundy, plum and oxblood
Why? Because Alicia Florrick loves her some red wine, her sweaters are often the same colour as said wine, and girlfriend can carry off a plum lipstick like no other.
tv-shows-nail-polish-04
Show: The X-Files
Colours: Mocha, gold-brown, brick
It’s the Dana Scully special, and the sooner we realize she helped launch brown lipstick’s comeback via X-Files on Netflix, the better.
tv-shows-nail-polish-05
Show: The Mindy Project
Colours: Bright blue, magenta, and patterned nail stickers
Dr. Mindy Lahiri walks a fine line between being a walking mannequin for Kate Spade and J. Crew, and being a, uh, normal human. This nail polish collab would need to reflect that.
tv-shows-nail-polish-06
Show: Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Colours: Sherbert orange (for Gina), cherry red (for Amy), patent leather black (for Rosa)
Introducing: three characters who couldn’t be more different and their corresponding nail polishes that follow that same rule. (And if Wuntch smartens up, we’ll issue a bonus colour. Likely navy, for her uniform.)
tv-shows-nail-polish-07
Show: Scandal
Colours: White, grey, and wine
Ultimately, we must continue to follow the Olivia Pope rule of three: white and grey to wear, and red to somehow not spill all over them.
tv-shows-nail-polish-08
Show: Orange Is The New Black
Colours: Fluorescent orange, black, orange-red (for Red’s hair, naturally)
Honestly, how this doesn’t already exist is a mystery to me and I’m sure anyone else who wears nail polish and watches television. The colours literally speak for themselves.
tv-shows-nail-polish-09
Show: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Colours: Cotton candy pink, lemonade yellow, teal
Behold! The brightest nails in the world. And appropriately so. Kimmy is the brightest (and most cheerful) character on television right now, and nails should match that. Either that, or just buy pink pants.
tv-shows-nail-polish-10
Show: Veep
Colours: Dark brown (Amy), nude (Katherine), gold (Sue), plus red, white, and blue (Selina)
Because nothing says patriotism like nail polish that can work for nearly any political situation.
