Beauty Confessionals: I learned that Cara Delevingne probably doesn’t wax her brows

A couple of years ago I attempted to do something only highly skilled professionals should be allowed to do—I waxed my own eyebrows. See, this was a sad attempt to save money because at the time I was a starving student and any money I had left over after paying for books, food and rent went straight to retail therapy. I thought it was a grand idea to save money on things I convinced myself I could do at home.

So there I was in front of the bathroom mirror, applying warm-ish wax to my face in what I thought was the perfect Cara Delevingne brow shape. After gently patting the cloth strip down and holding my breath, which is exactly what you’re not supposed to do, I yanked it from my brow and quickly repeated the process on the other side to even out the job. Feeling pleased with myself for being so savvy and DIY-chic, I took a closer look in the mirror to inspect the results. My face immediately fell from the crying-laughing emoji face I was sporting while thinking I had beat the system, to straight-up horrified. A good half of my right eyebrow was completely missing; I basically looked like I had pulled a cruel slumber party trick on myself. Panicking, I barged out of the bathroom and called an urgent house meeting with my three roommates. Their reactions? Let’s just say I got a few good laughs out of them.

The fix? Brow makeup—something I recommend regardless of what shape your brows are in. My personal favourite, Too Faced Brow Envy Shaping and Defining Kit, ($49,  sephora.com)  comes stocked with customizable colours and foolproof stencils that even the most brow-challenged, like myself, can’t mess up.

Let this be a lesson for us all—if you want Lily Collins brows, you better be ready to pay it up. Another tip: threading is actually much gentler on skin than waxing, but be prepared for potential waterworks—pain levels are higher. And if you’re wondering what happened to that cheeky half of my eyebrow, it did grow back, but it took time!

So, good luck fellow brow devotees—I seriously hope you don’t try this at home.
