Bianca Andreescu is the First Canadian to Make the US Open Quarter-Finals Since 1992
On Monday night, Bianca Andreescu made history as she beat American Taylor Townsend in the fourth round of the 2019 US Open.
The Ontario native took on wildcard entry Townsend at the Arthur Ashe court in a nail-biting three sets, eventually winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. The win secured her a place in the quarter finals – making her the first Canadian to appear in the quarter-finals since 1992. The last player to do so was Patricia Hy-Boulais.
Tonight, she will take on Elise Martens of Belgium in the primetime slot of 7pm. At present, the Canadian is seeded 15th with Mertens seeded 25th. However, Bianca certainly has her work cut out for her, given that Mertens is yet to drop a set in the tournament. The match will also mark the first time the pair has ever played one another.
Speaking of her opponent ahead of the match, 19-year-old Andreescu said, “She takes the ball pretty well, from what I’ve seen. She tries to put pressure right from the start of the point. She’s pretty aggressive. I know she has a pretty decent serve, too. She fights really hard.” As for her own approach, Bianca told press, “I’m just going to go out there and play my game because it’s been working the last couple of months. This year has been the best year of my life so far. I’ve never felt this confident before.”
Andreescu has done exceptionally well in her first US open tournament, coming off the back of two impressive wins at Indian Wells and the Rogers Cup this year. At the latter’s trophy presentation, Andreescu told the crowd that it “was only just the beginning” and she certainly was not wrong on that point.
We suggest you cancel your plans tonight, you’re not going to want to miss this.
