Calgary: 5 minutes with Nicole Richie
By Karen Ashbee
As part of the one-year anniversary celebrations at Holt Renfrew Calgary (510 Eighth Ave. SW, 403-269-7341, holtrenfrew.com), Nicole Richie presented her latest House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate collections at the store and took a moment to chat with us.
The ’60s and ’70s inspire so much of your work. What do you love about those decades?
“People weren’t afraid to marry bold colours and bold patterns, velvets and sequins. I love how brave everybody was.”
What kind of woman do you design for?
“A woman who wears many hats. These days, there are lots of working mothers who have two or three jobs and who don’t necessarily have time to spend two hours shopping.”
What can we look forward to in your spring collections?
“Spring is a little bit more romantic and feminine, with more colour. It’s also ’40s Southern-inspired—a dedication to my mother, who’s from Alabama. We have some fun floral prints, which are not too girlie. We’re also bringing in high-waisted pants, and shorts with some really cute button details.”
