Candice Swanepoel on L.A, Juicy Couture and the Return of Early 2000s Fashion
It’s no secret that the 2000s are back in a big way. Take one look at Paris Hilton’s Twitter feed. Or the hugely popular @popculturediedin2009 account. Or I don’t know, open a magazine. It’s low rise jeans and Juicy tracksuits galore!
Speaking of Juicy Couture, Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel is the face of the brand’s latest fragrance, Viva La Juicy Glacé ($89). It maintains the sweetness that the brand is known for, but it’s crisper, with notes of frozen mandarin and pear sorbet. It’s like perfume on ice.
We spoke to Candice about all things Juicy Couture, including Los Angeles (its birthplace) and the 2000s (the first fragrance was launched in ’06). Read the interview below.
Who is the Juicy Couture woman?
A vibrant, fun, outgoing woman. Always feminine. Always living life to the fullest. This particular Glacé woman is definitely a little cooler. I feel like she’s really confident. She takes more risks, I suppose.
Do you spritz directly onto your skin or in the air and then walk through it?
I feel like it’s such a waste to do that. I definitely spray it on my wrists and neck and in my hair. I think it lasts longer. Every time you move, you can smell the fragrance.
What’s your favourite thing to do in Los Angeles?
I just love driving around in L.A. I love being in a car and looking outside and reflecting. I’m quite an emotional person. I’m very affected by my surroundings. L.A is kind of like a movie for me.
What’s your favourite Juicy tracksuit colour?
Black. It is making a huge comeback. When I shot the fashion campaign with Behati, they gave us personalized ones which were really cute.
What 2000s trend will you never wear again?
What’s that cropped pant? There’s a word for them. Capris! I definitely would not go back to the capri look. I used to wear a lot of boob tubes, too. That’s what we used to call them in South Africa. They’re making a comeback now.
What scent do you wish you could bottle up?
That smell behind my son’s neck. It’s that baby smell. I’d bottle it and take it with me. I traveled somewhere for the first time without him and I took one of his little cloths with me.
