Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Black Mirror’s Relationship Expiry Date App
Ahhhh Valentine’s Day. There is no greater holiday to indulge in extravagant gestures of romance — or to be reminded that your relationship probably won’t last forever. Black Mirror, our favourite dystopian techno-drama, has rolled out a new website in celebration of February 14th to help you with that latter bit.
Black Mirror’s new website, www.coach.dating, is inspired by the future-phobic sci-fi series’ season four episode “Hang the DJ.” The episode is about a dystopian dating service that uses an algorithm called “The System” to match up a society of trusting people. Creepy, right? It gets creepier. The high-tech, Tinder-like app comes with a device called “Coach,” which is able to determine the length of a couple’s relationship.

The Coach website app does just that: it gives your romance a life span. You can start by visiting www.coach.dating.
Then, you’ll be asked to put your trust in the system.
If you choose to move forward, you’ll be given the option to invite your partner. (Or, if you’re playing at your cubicle desk and your BF won’t respond to your texts, you play alone.)
You’ll both be prompted to click Coach’s interface…
….at which time the device will start counting down….
…to reveal exactly how many more years, days, or minutes you have left in your current relationship.
The idea is, in theory, if both participants click at the exact same time you’ll have an “ultimate match.” But in practice — as I try to click from one tab to the next — the outcome feels a lot more random. So yes, the whole thing is probably B.S. — but if you’re looking to add some drama (or laughs) to your love life, it’s worth whipping out at tonight’s candlelit dinner date.
