The Guy Behind Balenciaga’s ‘Triple S’ Sneaker is Launching His Own Shoe Line
David Tourniaire-Beauciel, the French designer responsible for Balenciaga’s kindergarten-clunky Triple S sneaker, is launching his own shoe line. (“Before, there was this French proverb saying you need to suffer to be beautiful; Now, it’s over, we want to be comfortable,” he told Business of Fashion on his famed shoe design.) Tourniaire-Beauciel began his career three decades ago as Jean-Paul Gaultier’s accessory assistant, and is currently the creative director at Robert Clergerie. The direct-to-consumer line, called Shoes 53045, will run at a lower price point than Tourniaire-Beauciel’s creations for luxury brands; prices run in the $400 range, as opposed to $1,000+. The first style available is – of course – a sneaker, that looks like a hybrid between a Nike Air Max and the platforms worn by the Spice Girls in the ‘90s. The shoes are available for preorder starting today. (Business of Fashion)
Barry Manilow Made a Surprise Appearance at New York Fashion Week
When one thinks of Barry Manilow, high fashion isn’t usually the succeeding thought. but at Michael Kors F/W 2019 show at New York Fashion Week, the incongruous pair came together in a surprising confluence of events. The collection’s groovy ‘70s theme – Kors’ allegedly drew inspiration from “New York’s swinging west ‘50s in the ‘70s” and the “high octane chic of Studio 54” – was capped off by a surprise performance from Manilow, who appeared out of nowhere in a bedazzled orange leather jacket to perform “Copacabana” surrounding by dancing models. It was a total shock but also one of those tiny moments of wonder that make all of the BS one deals with in fashion totally worthwhile. The word ‘epic’ should not be used lightly, but I’ll dust it off anyways as the best descriptor of what it was like to experience this moment firsthand.
Supermodel Christy Turlington Made a Triumphant Return to the Runway
Christy Turlington returned to the runway after a nearly 30-year hiatus, wearing a gigantic feathered concoction at Marc Jacobs’ show at New York Fashion Week. Turlington, who now goes by Turlington Burns since her marriage to actor Edward Burns, last walked the runway in 1994. (Though she has modelled in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Cole Haan and Versace in the years since.) Turlington initially retired from modelling to pursue a college degree, and has since founded the philanthropic organization Every Mother Counts, dedicated to maternal healthcare. On Instagram, she posted a heartfelt account of her decision to return to the runway: “I have a 15 year old daughter who I desperately want to see and hear me and this is a medium that ‘speaks’ to her,” she wrote. Carine Roitfeld is Stepping Away From CR Fashion Book
Carine Roitfeld, aka the French girl’s answer to Anna Wintour, is lightening her workload at CR Fashion Book, the publication she launched in 2012 after departing from Vogue Paris. Though Roitfeld will technically remain editor-in-chief (“I never look at titles, to be honest,” she told WWD), she will take on less styling and editorial curation in favour of focusing on expanding her branding agency, CR Studio. “I think it’s definitely time to open the door to a new generation. People of fashion, you know, they get bored, so we need to feed them something exciting, energetic and new,” she told WWD. “I don’t want to be a dusty brand, I want to be a young brand. The worst is to become comfortable, then you become old…it’s a question of spirit.” Well noted. (WWD)
Marc Cain Releases a Love-Inspired Bag for Mother’s Day
You’ll never be caught bag-less at the grocery store again with the lunch of a helpful new accessory from Marc Cain. The German designer is launching a “help bag”– aka a small zippered pouch housing a canvas tote – that can easily be thrown in a purse to eliminate the need for plastic bags. The pouch and tote are printed with hearts in honour of Mother’s Day, and 50% of profits will go towards Plan International, a humanitarian organization that “advances children’s rights and equality for girls.” The pouches retail for $100 and will be available in Marc Cain stores in April. (Press release).
