Not to be outdone by big sister TIFF, the Calgary International Film Festival also netted Score: A Hockey Musical for its opening night gala [see the red carpet from the TIFF premiere]. Directed by Michael McGowan and starring Olivia Newton-John, singer/songwriter Marc Jordan, and newcomers Noah Reid and Allie MacDonald, it’s a musical, complete with singing and dancing, dedicated to our national pastime.

MacDonald was joined on the red carpet by the director, and singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman, who makes an appearance in the film. The actress wore a dress by Aussie designers Maurie & Eve, a wooly jacket, and a clutch from Toronto’s Jessica Jensen.

Workman played it safe with a black Hugo Boss suit (that he wore for his wedding!) and worked the casual vibe with a black tee, a pair of white runners and a black fedora from Toronto’s Big it Up. Workman described the film as a “totally charming little movie” and said he’d been having a blast in Calgary.

And Calgarians, better known for their casual approach to dressing, were sporting more suits and ties than the expected hockey jerseys and jeans.

After the gala screening, the very apropos Flames Central, owned by Calgary’s hockey team, was turned into party central. There, partygoers were treated to a touch up courtesy of FASHION magazine and Sephora’s top make-up artists.

With a concert by Workman, tasty nibbles, and unlimited bubby the opening was a definite hat trick.
