Coiffeurs with chutzpah

By Kristen Hammond

Rendered visually impaired by my too-long fringe, I decided to check out CAJH Maîtres Coiffeurs’ new location (743 Atwater, Montréal, 514-932-6303.) Normally, I shun the idea of testing-driving a new place, but my worries were squashed by rave reviews I’d read for stylists Alain Larivée and Justin Voss. Seeing their new salon’s hardwood floors and wide-open windows put me even more at ease—I felt like I was getting a salon fix in the comfort of my own home.

Larivée suggests that layers are the cure for my limp hair–woes, but assures me that he still wants to give me something with “a little personality.” In between deft snips of my locks and questions about my personal hair care routine, we discuss things we have in common (rescued dogs and small town upbringings) and I completely forget my haircut anxiety. Before I know it, my strawberry blonde nightmare has been transformed into a delicate dégradé of layers, which gives my hair the va-voom it was begging for. The best part: Larivée’s personalized approach, (and “How to Properly Blow Dry with a Round Brush” mini-lesson) means that I might be able to replicate the truly fabulous result in my own home. Now that’s what I call getting the attention you deserve!
