Doritos Is Making Chips for Women that are “Cleaner” and “Less Crunchy”
At a time when women are being encouraged to speak up, Doritos is introducing a product that encourages us to be quiet.
In a recent interview with Freakonomics, the CEO of PepsiCo–Doritos parent company–Indra Nooyi, revealed that the food and beverage conglomerate has been looking into gender specific snacks. “As you watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips,” Nooyi explains, when asked how men and women eat chips differently, “they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth.” According to Nooyi, women would love to do the same–but they don’t. Women, apparently, “don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavour into their mouth.”
Their solution? Low-crunch, finger-stick-free, purse sized chips–“because women love to carry a snack in their purse.” The Internet, unsurprisingly, has some thoughts:
Women: We want equal pay for equal work and an end to sex discrimination in the workplace.
Society: Here’s a bag of Lady Doritos so you won’t have to crunch too loudly in front of your male colleagues.

Good news, ladies. We got a female Colonel Sanders and Doritos that don’t crunch, so feminism is cancelled. We’ve achieved equality.

About to sit down and write an angry letter to Doritos. pic.twitter.com/CXEWt1Xb1s

This isn’t the first time that a packaged food has been assigned a specific gender. There’s whisky for women, yogurt for men and a Dr. Pepper that’s advertised with the tagline “it’s not for women.” But this is 2018, isn’t it? Aren’t we starting to understand that women aren’t buying into stale stereotypes about how we should behave?
There’s nothing wrong with being polite, but there’s nothing wrong with crunchy your chips, licking your fingers and pouring those cheesy, broken crumbs into your mouth either. (And for the record, this lady Doritos lover plans to keep on crunching.)
