Edmonton: Shower, à la mode
My life changed dramatically after the birth of my first son, but I maintained my sense of style with ease. Stilettos? Almost exclusively. Bimonthly mani/pedi? Not a problem. Shoulder grazing earrings? Yes, of course! It wasn’t until I had twin boys that the words “dry clean only” made me tremble with fear, having given up on wearing anything but cotton T-shirts from American Apparel.
I almost cried for joy when I stepped into Modecor (10428-82 Ave., 780-439-5292), a lifestyle boutique with the attitude of an emporium. First, it carries hard-to-find French fashion labels including, Cop.Copine (shown), IKKS, Bosca and Pablo as well as the Canadian brand Lux & Luster. And they only stock one piece in each size, so you won’t run the risk of bumping into your doppelganger while dining on gourmet burgers at Delux. I also consider Modecor my “shower” store for housewarming parties and bridal and baby showers. (Tip: for baby boys, pick up the simple, but life-saving Pee-pee Teepee, which comes in cute and clever cowboy and surfing prints.) As for my fine fabric phobia, I am once again a regular at my local drycleaners. Welcome back, cashmere, silk and wool. Oh, how I have missed you.
