Emma Watson Defends her Braless Vanity Fair Cover

If you still find feminism “confusing,” Emma Watson is here to clear things up.

The actress/activist was shot by famed fashion photographer Tim Walker in a series of striking images for Vanity Fair’s March cover. One photograph in particular caught people’s attention.

This barely-there Burberry top has been the source of mass media controversy. Is it hypocritical for an outspoken advocate for equality to show off her cleavage? Can you be a feminist and pose in a revealing top for Vanity Fair? Critics seem to believe that feminism and nudity are mutually exclusive, suggesting that a woman cannot be both political and in touch with her sexuality.

Hmmmmm. Clearly, social media is filled with misconceptions about what it means to be a feminist. For those confused, Watson, a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, clarified the definition of feminism.

“Feminism is about giving women choice,” she told Reuters. “Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it. It’s very confusing.”
