Everyone Called Alexander Wang’s Hair Accessory a Banana Clip and the Internet Was Not Having It
My friend Liza always has a hair claw on her in case a hot flash strikes. I’ve witnessed her retrieve one during a beauty event dinner and quickly wrap her hair up and off her neck. Made of plastic, these spring loaded clips were especially popular in the 80s, which is why they appeared at Alexander Wang’s F/W 18 show on Saturday night, where power executives of that decade were the theme.
Except that backstage, lead hair stylist Guido Palau referred to them as banana clips and thus, all the reporting that followed continued to cite it as that. That’s when women who recall wearing an actual banana clip in their formative years started to challenge the claim with photos.
Movie idea: It’s 2018, and Crocodile Dundee is now a successful hair stylist in NYC. “You call that a banana clip? THIS is a banana clip.” pic.twitter.com/Pq94Jx9KBC

You’re totally right! That’s not a #bananaclip. These are banana clips – I last wore one in elementary school. pic.twitter.com/3gGJLXJBXz

Yep. Not a banana clip – and don’t make me bust out my 8th grade graduation pic to prove it ??

Definitely not a banana clip. Co-signed, someone who had no less than 10 banana clips to go with my Dirty Dancing perm.

And no, they aren’t also known as claw clips, Allure. They are two distinct things. That said, I am totally down with the resurgence of claws, especially given that scrunchies are back.
