Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
Well, it’s been a week. Between Kanye West’s “Make America Great Again” tour and Gigi Hadid in blackface on Vogue Italia’s latest cover, the internet had plenty to react to this week. Without further a-do, here’s what upset the internet this week.
Kanye West Says That Slavery is a “Choice”
THE STORY:
In an interview with TMZ, Kanye West proclaimed his love for Trump and referred to slavery as being a choice. During the interview, West said “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice.”
THE REACTION:
The comment received instant backlash from TMZ employee Van Lathan, who spoke to West about the issues with his comment, finishing by telling West “Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled and brother, I am unbelievably hurt.” The Twitter-verse was quick to praise Lathan’s speech and respond to West’s comment.
Watching that guy Van from TMZ rip into Kanye, to his face, was wonderfully satisfying.https://t.co/tLD2UPilYE

Artists have always been political.Sometimes I choose to ignore their leanings and just enjoy the music.I tend to switch off when they do self righteous interviews.Kanye woke me up.Dude, never put the words 'Slavery' and 'choice' in the same sentence.

Don’t usually get caught up in commenting about stuff like this but I saw what Kanye West said and I was ASHAMED. 400 Years of slavery a CHOICE???? Really! All I’ll say is this: I’m incredibly proud of that staffer from TMZ. Brilliant, Eloquent & totally appropriate response.#WTH

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE:
West is known for saying things that shock the general public, but this time he’s taken things too far. This rage is built off of centuries of hardship and suffering that West dismissed as a choice. Of course that’s going to upset people, and it should.

Blake Lively Unfollows Ryan Reynolds on Instagram
THE STORY:
The internet collectively lost it when it was discovered that Blake Lively had unfollowed husband Ryan Reynolds on Instagram, many believing that a break-up announcement would soon follow.
THE REACTION:
If Blake lively and Ryan Reynolds are separated then I am blocking every single guy in my phone and social media bc I will lose faith in “love”
— Erika (@perezerk) May 1, 2018
My heart can NOT handle Ryan Reynolds and Blake lively breaking up. I. JUST. CANT pic.twitter.com/dlPIbwyYQa
— Tear (@Drewmaknae) May 1, 2018
WHY DID BLAKE LIVELY DELETE HER INSTAGRAM POSTS AND UNFOLLOWED RYAN REYNOLDS I HOPE THIS IS THEM TROLLING AGAIN I SWEAR TO GOD THEY CAN'T DIVORCE I'M FREAKING OUT THEY ARE THE REASON I STILL BELIEVE IN LOVE

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE:
It’s alright everybody, it was a false alarm. Luckily the whole thing was just done to promote Lively’s new movie “A Simple Favour,” and it seems to have succeeded at gaining a lot of attention. Reynolds is already cracking jokes about the incident, saying that it’s a “terrible way to find out that [he’s] been kicked out of the house.”
HOW WE FEEL:
Our faith in love remains intact.
Gigi Hadid in Blackface on the Cover of Vogue Italia (Again)
THE STORY:
Gigi Hadid and Vogue Italia are under fire for the latest cover of the magazine, which shows Hadid (and a male model) with a suspiciously tanned appearance. This is the second time that the model and the magazine have come under fire for darkening Hadid’s complexion, the first time being in December of 2015.
THE REACTION:
did they try to make gigi hadid look like donatella or something? this is probably vogue italia’s worst cover pit out. it doesn’t even look like her. if they wanted to edit her face why didn’t they just get a model to fit the purpose in the first place? pic.twitter.com/lj3ZwWnxF6
— ɐʎʞnlɐɥɔ (@racksanda) May 3, 2018
In case you can’t tell who that is, it’s Gigi Hadid, who has been edited into another person and given such a deep “””tan””” that it’s insulting to even try to pretend that it’s not blackface.
— Christy Somos (@C_Somos) May 3, 2018
Not sure what @voguemagazine was thinking? Photoshopped @GiGiHadid to the point where she no longer looks like herself and can totally see why people are calling it blackface. What are ya'll doing?? pic.twitter.com/UctM5xJxsN
— Kaila Karns (@Kaila_Karns) May 3, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE REACTION:
The fact that this is the second time that this magazine with this model has come under fire for blackface is cause for concern. The photographer, Steven Klein, is guilty of photographing another model in blackface for Vogue France in 2009. He also the guy responsible for those photos of Kylie Jenner in a wheelchair. The fact that no one has seemed to learn their lesson is reason for upset. The model has since apologized on Twitter and Instagram for her part in the ordeal, saying that the vision was “not executed correctly.”

HOW WE FEEL:
If they want a model of a different ethnicity, hire a model of a different ethnicity.
“Robin Hood” Costumes are Not Historically Accurate
THE STORY:
After a teaser trailer for the upcoming film was released, fans began to critique the accuracy of the costumes in the movie. Taron Egerton, who plays Robin Hood, is seen wearing sleek leather jackets and embellished blazers.
THE REACTION:
What accents are those????? Nothing like the Nottinghamshire and Midlands accents at all. And the costumes are way way too perfect. Don't look made at the time at all. Way too modern. At least the BBC Robin hood series was believable.
— Paul Jay (@pauljay1501) May 3, 2018
did i hallucinate that they were wearing suit jackets in the trailer??
— Rowan Ellis ? (@HeyRowanEllis) May 3, 2018
What in the world? I can't believe they did this. Fully machine stitched. Looking at production stills, all costumes obviously machine stitched. They didn't even try to fake hand sewn. The New Robin Hood line, coming to a GAP near you.
— Dolores (@DoloresOfCourse) May 3, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE REACTION:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Disney’s portrayal of Robin Hood was also scarily inaccurate (i.e. the real Robin Hood was not a fox). As far as things we’ve got going on in the world, let’s let this little inaccuracy slide.
HOW WE FEEL:
Taron Egerton in a leather jacket is okay by us.
