Cottages, concerts, road trips, Euro trips—summer is the time for applying a YOLO sensibility to your finances. Cue the mid-August swan song and the subsequent fall fashion and beauty trend reports it brings and we’re left to wonder how updating our wardrobe is going to be feasible at all thanks to some pretty hefty credit card bills.
Turns out, there were actually quite a few trends on the Fall 2015 runways that were simply the result of clever styling tricks. What could be easier than changing up your look with some imaginatively placed baubles or by DIY-ing an attention-grabbing necklace? The end of summer is traumatic enough without reconciling yourself to a shame spiral of clothing-induced debt. Click through the gallery below for our top inspirational picks for styling your way to a chic and (cheap) wardrobe this fall.

1. Put a Brooch on It
You know that jewellery box filled with odds and ends and gifts from grandma that everyone relegates to the back of their closet? Well, it finally has a use! Dust that puppy off and proceed to fasten shiny baubles all over your coif du jour—not only will your look be Prada-level on point, but you’ll also score major brownie points with the fam and probably reaffirm their decision to send you to art school.

2. Headbands
Blair Waldorf may no longer be plotting poorly conceived schemes on TV for our viewing pleasure, but her sartorial influence lives on as evidenced by her signature hair accessory infiltrating runways everywhere this season. From the sultry silk ribbons at Chanel to Fendi’s circlet of ruched leather, headbands are a no fuss way to add a playful hint of coquettishness to any ensemble.

3. Clip It
Revert to your five-year-old self and affix your hair follicles with all manner of fasteners. At Rochas and Suno the look was a single clip resulting in a sleek part or spraying chignon, while Cushnie et Ochs went for a more-is-more approach that incorporated a smattering of bobby pins. The good news? All of these styling aids are readily available at one Shoppers Drugmart!

4. Glitter Lids
Kicking your beauty routine up a notch is another way to update your look without breaking the bank. There was a profusion of glitter gracing the eyes for FW15, with Rodarte’s strip of sparkle just below the lower lash line likely proving the easiest to replicate (see: Dollar Store craft section). If you’re feeling a bit more ambitious, the crystal-dipped lashes à la Carolina Herrera or Temperley’s sequin-encrusted peepers are guaranteed showstoppers.

5. Glove Love
It’s a terrible shame there’s such a deficiency of opera-length gloves in our day-to-day lives. Think how elegant they would make even the most mundane activities—picking out an avocado would become a live-action drama (but I digress). In all seriousness though, a pair of these arm-ensconcing accouterments can elevate the most basic LBD to a look worthy of Downton Abbey (plus people will assume that you are extremely refined and worldly, even if you’re, say, eating McDonald’s on a curb at 3 a.m.).

6. Statement Ear-Danglers
Ever since Céline extolled the merits of the single earring last fall, designers have been clamoring to put their own spin on lobe adulation. Perhaps the most notable of the season were Alexander Wang’s spiralized pearl confections at Balenciaga, which can easily be replicated by re-using all those discarded second, third and fourth piercings from high school.

7. Neck Ties
There’s a new erogenous zone in town, and it’s peeking out from under swaths of feathers and pussy bows. Time to repurpose that tie your boyfriend swore he’d never be caught dead in and loop it loosely around your collar in the vein of a carefree Chloé girl. Or maybe head on down to Michael’s and load up on craft supplies, proclaiming your new hobby to be making wreaths that will live not on doors but, in fact, just south of your visage, as at Dries Van Noten (fall is a time to be festive, after all!).
