Spring’s bright lips, clean skin and dainty hair accessories were fun, but the Fall 2013 beauty trends give us much to be excited about. From ombré lips to decadent glitter, designers are embracing individuality with fall makeup, giving artists free reigns to experiment with the extremes. Lipgloss was layered on eyelids instead of lips, jewels adorned ears as well as eyes and sleek wigs were cropped into edgy bobs. Texture was a key message with makeup for fall. Glistening strands created a wet hair effect at Prada, while makeup artists layered everything from lipgloss to skin balm on eyelids to add a slippery sheen for a slick skin effect. Val Garland painted M.A.C’s Pro Eye Gloss on models backstage at Giambattista Valli to create a custom “cellophane eye”. Textured lips made their mark on the Fall 2013 runways as well. There were matte mouths with blurred edges at Christian Dior, ombré effects on lips at Marni, as well as faded lip liner at and worn-off stains that looked like they had weathered a long, eventful night.

Gone are the vibrant blues of spring, Fall 2013 is the season of shocking red makeup. Reds and darker berries was the in demand fall makeup colour for both lips and tips. In some cases, nails and mouths were painted in the same shade. Variations of crimson shadow were in favour on the Fall 2013 runways- pale peach at Prabal Gurung, diffused berry at Cynthia Rowley, rose gold at Creatures of the Wind. Our favourite use of the hue: Pat McGrath’s metallic cranberry-rimmed eyes at Gucci. Check out L’Oréal Paris eyeshadow in “Sweet Strawberry” or the M.A.C Chromeographic Pencil in “Process Magenta” to try this fall makeup trend at home. Glitter was also popular for fall beauty: Peter Philips layered what looked like tiny mirror shards along upper lash lines at Chanel. And, though he’d planned to adhere the glitter and jewels he’d designed for Dries Van Noten around the eyes, he switched the placement from visual to audio presenting a strikingly beautiful earcuff.

This season’s version of perfect skin was sufficiently powdered. Fluffy brushes were permanently wielded by makeup artists, and it seemed everyone was buffing complexions, propelled by a mission to create matte skin. This velvet texture will be a key fall makeup look. Choppy, punk-inspired hair was a runway fixture seen at Joe Fresh, Thakoon, Jean Paul Gaultier and more. Edie Campbell’s cropped cut guided the wigs at Marc Jacobs while not so subtle fox-fur mohawks turned heads at Fendi. But if you’re going to go all out, big hair is the big beauty trend for fall. Longer locks were styled into well-coiffed clouds of hair that floated down the runway at Rick Owens and at Marc by Marc Jacobs the big hair was overly teased for even bigger shock value. Subtle was not the objective for models on L’Wren Scott’s runway, where hair was inspired by Grace Coddington’s wild frizz.
