Fall fashion and beauty resolutions: 14 editors divulge their best laid plans
by Nicole LiveyToday marks the first day of fall, effectively extinguishing whatever remnants of summer we were still desperately clinging to (goodbye, sweet rompers). That’s right, ’tis the season to dive headfirst into a pumpkin spice latte and and fuzzy sweater and frankly, we’re not that mad about it.
After lackadaisical dog days, this is the perfect opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start fresh, whether it’s vowing to keep your skin hydrated in defence of dropping temps or daring to wear a statement coat that’s way outside your comfort zone. We’ve tapped our team to see what fashion and beauty resolutions they’ll be focusing on maintaining this autumn—consider it your cheat sheet to owning the season.

“I need to figure out my under eye concealer situation. I’ve been trying different ones here and there, but haven’t really taken the endeavor seriously. It feels more dire at the moment since lately I’m sleeping around five hours a night, plus moving into fall means my complexion will get paler, making the circles more prominent. So, I’ve just put a concealer/corrector combo from Bobbi Brown into rotation.”

“Colder temperatures means I need to start upping my body moisturizing game but I’m far too pressed for time most mornings to deal with it, despite the cries of my flaky skin. That’s why I’m busting out L’Occitane’s Almond Shower Oil. It’s a cleanser that leaves behind a lovely layer of hydration so I can go straight from towel into clothes.”

“I’m a sucker for statement coats (my Pinterest page is proof), but I’ve never had the guts to actually wear something so loud out in public – until now. The first time I laid eyes on a Shrimps faux fur coat, I thought it was the best thing ever, even though I felt like I could never pull it off. But with all the colourful fur coats on the fall runways, I’ve decided that this will be the season to finally rock it.”

“I’m aiming to track down a Mason Pearson brush (hopefully at a discounted price) this season if it kills me! Regular trims for my long mane are in order too, but I feel this magical brush will help a lot.”

“I’m on the look out to swap my jean jacket for a preppy blazer, like this one from J.Crew. It sold out before I even had time to order it, but I’ll be searching for something similar to keep me warm and office-appropriate this fall.”

“I am the ultimate minimalist when it comes to my hair and makeup (mascara is more than enough for my prep time) but I’m obsessed with funky makeup. I’ve always wanted to learn all the new techniques that come every season but laziness takes over and I stick with the same old look.
So, this fall I’m going to make a serious effort to actually test out some different trends whether it’s colourful eyeliner, mastering a quirky pony or figuring out how this whole contouring thing really works (my makeup version of Mt. Everest). Fingers crossed I don’t end up looking like the fourth Twisted Sister.”

“Every fall I seem to let my tights fall into total disrepair—rips, pilling, stretching, you name it, I’ve probably turned a blind eye to it. This year, I’m investing in some quality hosiery and making an effort to take good care of them. Hand-washing only!”

“I’m vowing to keep my feet in summer sandal condition. Rather than abandoning my regular pedicure appointments like in years’ past (my toes will be hiding under thick socks and Sherpa-approved shearling boots anyways), I won’t change a thing right through the spring – including the Essie nude nail polish I’ve been loving these last few months.”

“I broke a toe in May and have exploited the sneaker footwear trend (Birks, Nikes, Brooks, Stan’s) perhaps a little too much. For fall, I resolve to pick up the pace with some new shoes. The affordable, low-heeled Bonnie Bootie in black cherry from Coach might be a good start.”

“Cashmere sweaters and hot apple cider are two signs that fall has officially arrived. Unfortunately, dry, dehydrated skin is inevitable too. I’m going to slather on Clinique’s Deep Comfort Body Butter every morning and night—it’s my suit of armour to wage the battle against Old Man Winter.”

“Thanks in large part to Uber and the cheap cost of getting around, this fall I will be sporting less sock and more skin when it comes to footwear. Traditionally, when it starts to get cold I break out the boots, but with the jogger trend still going strong into fall I will be wearing leather slip-ons and sneakers well into winter.”

“Year after year, I promise myself I’ll start wearing bright lipstick come fall, and I usually last about a week. So my backup (read: more realistic) resolution is to be more diligent about moisturizing my body every day. I have no problem constantly slathering moisturizer on my face, but I totally neglect my body. That’s gonna catch up with me one day and it, um, won’t be cute. So I’m definitely (hopefully) getting into the habit this fall.”

“I find that a glass of water is a great pick-me-up for when my skin is feeling drab, especially when we’re in production. Lucky for me, our health editor/my cubicle mate, always has an industrial-sized water pitcher nearby to ensure our hydration levels are on point (thanks, Emilie!). However, when I’m on the go I like having a bottle of Evian with me.”

“While prepping for fall I’m taking my leather and suede boots and shoes to my neighborhood cobbler for a revival session. Breathing new life into my salt stained and dusty kicks will hopefully help discourage a complete wardrobe overhaul. My black suede thigh high boots will be perfectly good after a healthy dose of TLC.”
