It’s been a banner week for talking point magazine covers. First, Paris Hilton’s nude shoot for one of Paper’s Fandemonium issues reminded us of Kim Kardashian’s famous pose for the same publication, while Kylie Jenner’s shot for Interview raised eyebrows for…many reasons.
But mission accomplished. If the goal of each magazine was to get people talking (which ultimately helps sell copies), why wouldn’t they take risks with cover stars willing to do the same? However, where Paris Hilton’s comeback shows a maturity that wasn’t necessarily present in her heyday, Jenner’s shoot raises some questions. First, why a wheelchair? Second, how many people approved this concept (and how did/does Kylie feel about it)? Lastly, where do we draw the line between artistic and offensive?
So as most pop culture controversies do, these both reminded us of the fashion industry’s rich history of making us talk about artistic concepts (and why they’re so great or completely off-point). Here are 11 of the most controversial magazine covers ever.
most controversial magazine covers britney spears rolling stone
Britney Spears, Rolling Stone
In March of 1999, Britney Spears made her Rolling Stone cover debut, and despite the singer being 17, she was arguably made to look much younger thanks to the Teletubby in her arms. Highlight of the piece? Britney’s disbelief at the controversy of “Baby . . . One More Time.” “All I did was tie-up my shirt!” she mused.
most controversial magazine covers rihanna lui
Rihanna, Lui
Back in April 2014, Rihanna posed topless on the cover of Lui, which got her banned from Instagram. (Arguably the mother of #FreeTheNipple)
most controversial magazine covers azealia banks dazed confused
Azealia Banks, Dazed and Confused
In the days of “212” (so: August 2012) Azealia Banks took to the cover of Dazed and Confused and blew up a condom alongside the caption, “Azealia Banks blows up.” (Accurate!) For that, the cover was banned from seven countries, and Dazed wasn’t shy about letting anyone know.
most controversial magazine covers lindsay lohan purple
Lindsay Lohan, Purple Fashion
For their Spring/Summer 2010 issue, Purple Fashion enlisted Terry Richardson (ugh) to shoot Lindsay Lohan as Jesus Christ himself. (It helps if you remember that five years back, the Mean Girls star was being “crucified” by the media.)
most controversial magazine covers benicio del toro l’officiel hommes
Benicio Del Toro, L’Homme Officiel
For reasons no one can really understand, Benicio Del Toro appeared on the cover of L’Homme Officiel Winter 2012 issue. Understandably, everyone was concerned. First, because no one could answer why he was fully dressed and holding a naked, unconscious woman. Second, everyone involved in the shoot agreed to participate in this.
most controversial magazine covers lady gaga vogue japan
Lady Gaga, Vogue Hommes Japan
September 2010 was a strange time. First, because “Lady Gaga meat dress” was something meaningful to us, and second because Mama Monster appeared in only meat on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan. Shot by Terry Richardson (again — ugh), the shoot didn’t go unnoticed by PETA who said “you want to avoid putting meat on or in your body.” (Sure!)
most controversial magazine covers selena gomez v magazine
most controversial magazine covers nicole trunfio elle australia
Nicole Trunfio, Elle Australia
In June, Nicole Trunfio used Elle Australia to make a point: breastfeeding is so normal, it should happen on the cover of a magazine. And like, preach. As part of her mission to #NormalizeBreastfeeding, Trunfio fed her son Zion for all to see, and was surprised when everybody who saw it made such a big deal.
most controversial magazine covers khloe kardashian complex
Khloe Kardashian, Complex
For their August/September issue this year, Complex recruited Khloe Kardashian to channel her inner Olivia Newton John and get physical — which is why she appeared on the cover, wearing a sheer onesie while lifting weights. However, less was made of the actual cover than the fact some of her photos were allegedly retouched. (Which is why she took to Instagram to compare images and say that she felt fantastic about both. “Hi hater!”)
most controversial magazine covers kim kardashian paper
Kim Kardashian, Paper
As if you think we’d leave this off. Last November, Kim Kardashian appeared totally nude on the cover of Paper, which encouraged its readers (and everybody else) to #BreakTheInternet. It worked: Kardashian’s cover was meme-ified, tweeted about, yelled over, and is arguably now the stuff of pop culture history. Internet = broken.
most controversial magazine covers kylie jenner interview
Kylie Jenner, Interview
For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, Kylie Jenner showed up on the Steven Klein-shot cover of Interview this month in a wheelchair, which has been described so far as a “dominatrix Barbie doll meets Fembot meets Stepford wife.” Okay. Because of the controversy, Interview recently issued an apology for “offending anyone” and assured the shoot was for art and art alone. Maybe try again, guys.
