From Sweeping Trains to Power Suits, Here are the Best Looks From the 61st Annual Grammy Awards
The Grammys red carpet is where we’ve seen some of the most head-turning outfits of our times, from JLo’s plunging Versace dress in 2000 to Lady Gaga’s custom Armani celestial look in 2010 and Nicki Minaj’s Handmaid’s Tale-inspired red gown in 2012. But the days of these daring and sometimes questionable ensembles seem to be in the past, as stars took a more reserved approach this year. Rather than an influx of conversation-starting statement pieces, this year’s red carpet was full of more traditional awards season attire, such as voluminous flowing gowns and sexy pantsuits.
We saw vast trains, like the floral Giambattista Valli haute couture ensemble worn by St. Vincent and the shimmering Atelier Versace look worn by Dua Lipa. We saw a feminine reimagining of the pantsuit, in the form of Kylie Jenner’s pastel pink Balmain look, cinched at the waist with a wide silver-plated belt. And of course we can’t forget Michelle Obama’s unexpected appearance; she stunned in a shimmering power suit by Sachin & Babi.
Thankfully, a few stars did still opt for the avant-garde, including Cardi B in vintage Thierry Mugler, Katy Perry in a bell-shaped Balmain ruffled dress and Janelle Monae in sculptural Jean Paul Gaultier. Click through the slideshow for our favourite looks from music’s biggest night.
