Goop-Approved Skin and Bodycare Brand Sangre De Fruta Launches a Shower Collection
There are body creams and then there’s Sangre de Fruta Botanical Body Cream. It’s a dreamy, buttery beauty confection because of the technique used by founder Allison Audrey Weldon, which involves repeatedly whipping and cooling until said texture is achieved. Goop‘s Jean Godfrey-June has described it as “one of the most gorgeous ever felt—no conventional cream I’ve ever tried matches its delicacy and lightness.”
Today, Weldon is expanding her small batch Vancouver-based brand with what she calls “the botanical shower collection”: shampoo, conditioner and hand soap. Hair was a deviation for her (as well as a request from customers), so it was over a year in the making, requiring months of research and experimentation with ingredients and formulating. The goal was finding the right balance to create a thick texture, the appropriate level of “squeaky cleanness feel for the hair and skin” as well as the scent experience Weldon wanted to provide.
That aspect comes in three varieties: Garden of Earthly Delights (sandalwood, bergamot and cedar), Neroli Noir (orange blossoms, petitgrain and spikenard, considered a luxury in ancient Egypt) and Head of Roses (rose plus sandalwood). “That was a must because our Rose No. 1 cream is a best seller and I just love rose with sandalwood,” says Weldon. “I also just selfishly wanted the precious rose oil in my own shower.” It also meant that the price for Head of Roses had to be slightly higher. “I didn’t want to compromise on the true rose scent, but rose oils and absolutes are very expensive.”
Likely making the sticker shock easier to take will be the super-sized 500 ML bottles that the products are housed in, which Weldon points out won’t need to be re-stocked as often, make a nice gift, and will hopefully inspire customers to re-use them (she intends to use her own for dish soap). “The grand plan is to have a refill program, but one step at a time,” she says.
Organic, vegan and free of sulphates, parabens, DEAs and glycols, the formula’s ingredients are also ‘ocean-friendly’, meaning certified biodegradable. This was critical to Weldon for products that get washed down the sink. “I live on an island on the west coast of B.C. and can see the ocean from my living room,” she says. “I don’t want anything I create to mess with it.”
The Botanical Shower Collection is available now.
