Here’s what our editors’ moms looked like in their heydays

This photo of my mom (on the right) and her friend was taken in the late ’70s. From what she’s told me she loved those white lace-up heels, and so do I. In fact, I’d totally wear this exact outfit right now if I could. —D’Loraine Miranda, Assistant Editor

This photo is from the summer of 1975, my mom would have been a little bit younger than I am today. I love the shot because it perfectly captures my mom’s easy breezy style. Here is my mom, my sister, my dad and myself in the late ’60s. Mom was in her Jackie Kennedy/Mary Tyler Moore phase. It’s a period I associate with A-line minidresses, square-toed pumps and lots of trips to the hairdresser. She was always stylish and impeccable, until everything changed with her first massive stroke at age 56. —Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-Chief

This photo of my mom, Mary, was taken on her wedding day in 1976. It was a cold December day so sleeves were a must. Turns out, long sleeved wedding gowns are my absolute favourite, so we must have similar taste! Her look was timeless, and she made such an effortlessly beautiful bride. —Hilary Hatt, Designer

If there’s one thing I can never have too many of, it’s striped T-shirts. So when I recently came across this photo of my parents in 1968 at the CNE, it felt like I discovered where my obsession came from. She also just looks so cool and carefree, and it’s always fun to see that your mom had a life that preceded you. —Lesa Hannah, Beauty Director

This picture must have been taken at the airport in the ’70s when flying was an exciting prospect. My parents were newish immigrants and if someone was coming or going we ALL went to see them on arrival and departure. In this pic my mom is wearing gold dangly earrings that are typically Indian, but her hair is ’70s natural wave. What makes this picture so unusual though is that mom is smirking. Mom is not a smirker, in person she always has a warm, inviting grin. Ironically it reminds me of what I learned most from my mother. And that is to always smile. Just. This is my mother slaying it in 1962. She is on the steps of her friend’s house in Montorio nei Frentani, the small Italian town she is from. Here, she’s 19, single and gearing up for her move to Canada—which was scheduled in ‘63. She made the dress herself. She calls this a “casual day look.” She would prefer I used an image that was more chic. I admire her so much. —Elio Iannacci, Features Editor

I have always looked to my mom for style inspiration and her unfailing good taste, often “borrowing” items from her closet without her permission, which I KNOW she took as the compliment it was and didn’t drive her crazy at all ;) She even managed to navigate the hazards of late eighties swimwear (which I can only imagine was horrifying), and is pictured here in a colourful halter and oversized white shades that I would still gladly “borrow” today. This picture is from the early ’70s, when my parents were just dating. It’s one of the many I’ve stolen or borrowed from their house because I honestly can’t get enough of how amazing my mom looked at the time (still does, obv). This is my mom at 22 years old, on a cruise from Russia (where she went to school) to Norway. She’s always been into minimal, effortless looks, and lots of black and white, which is something I can definitely relate to. Like, her spaghetti strap tank top and high-waisted black jeans are literally me rn.
