How to Wear Dark Lipstick During the Day (Without Looking Goth)
When the temperature dips and the leaves begin to change, we beauty junkies switch out our bright lipsticks for darker shades like clockwork. While a romantic berry lip is usually our go-to each fall, tones as dark as black stormed down the Fall 2016 runways, inspiring us (and Taylor Swift) to venture into darker and more extreme beauty territory. Now, before you think the dark lip should be saved for Halloween, hear us out. This week, we asked our Beauty Panel to show us how easy it is to wear a dark lip for daytime.
Challenge 125: How do you wear a dark lip for daytime?

The key to a dark lip in the daytime is to keep the rest of your face fresh and light. I like to moisturize and prime my skin with a little concealer under the eyes and a light BB cream on my face. For me, contouring and adding a dark lip for the day feels far too dramatic. I like keeping it simple. Add a defined brow, mascara and a light blush and you are set! Since the colour of the lip adds so much to the look, why not keep it the focal point? I love a dark lipstick in a berry tone; it is so flattering on almost all skin types.

During the day, I recommend pairing a dark lip with clean looking skin and minimal eye makeup. My go-to is a nude eyeshadow with a few coats of mascara. Keep the skin glowing with a very soft blush so that you don’t overwhelm the face with too much colour. If Falls dark pigmented shades aren’t for you then try a tint in a similar tone and lightly press it into the lips.

I am such a fan of a bold lip for daytime. Even when I have a call time at 5 a.m., you can still catch me walking into the hair and makeup trailer rocking a deep red lip. Pair it with a bit of skin correcting, a natural flush on the cheeks, bold brows and a couple swipes of mascara and you have yourself a great go-to look. It can look super stylish for daytime, even in casual clothing—kind of like contrasting a leather jacket with a super-sweet floral dress. Another bonus: It’s a huge time-saver. I like to call it my “I may be tired but I won’t look tired” look. I may have only five minutes to do my makeup, but I can still look classy (or at least try to!).

Sometimes it can be hard to wear a dark lip during the day. I don’t want it to look like I’m ready to go out for an evening of dancing when it’s 2 p.m. on a Tuesday. I find the best way to work a dark lip during the day is to do the ombré effect. I apply a dark lipstick all over my lips, then I dab a lighter colour in the centre of my lips and blend it out with my fingers (I use a liquid lipstick as the lighter colour because it’s easy to blend).
To complement this super-easy lip art, I wear a simple matte eye look—I find that wearing a bold eye with a bold lip can look a bit too intense. Wearing subtle eye makeup keeps the focus on the lips. I also do a little bit of highlighting for a bit of dimension, so the overall look isn’t totally matte.
