How to wear fall’s top coat trends: 4 hit styles, infinite outfit opportunities

Mother Nature is stealing degrees left, right and center. The morning commute has become a chilly one and hot chocolate has officially entered the regular morning rotation. The time has come to think about a coat that will see you through from the first gust of flurries to April’s soggy slushfest. If you’ve got to pull this piece out of the closet every day for the next few months, why not make it something fabulous?

Street style stars are a great place to look for inspiration. If you’re feeling bold, a saturated bright like pepto pink, acid green or scarlet, worn with colour blocked separates, is a good antidote to the dark days ahead. Warm fun fuzz versions embellished with metallics or quirky prints (like silhouetted faces) pair well with rocker chick extras like chain-wrapped booties and foil-flecked skinnies. If you’re after a classic shape like the double-breasted officer’s coat, keep your outfit in ship shape with button-front sailor pants and naval approved stripes. If you’re a ’70s girl at heart, shearling’s your best bet this season. It begs to be worn with denim skirts, floppy hats and suede boots.
