I Took My Dad to the Racetrack for Father’s Day, and Here’s What Happened
In the days leading up to Father’s Day, there’s almost always that mad scramble to figure out what to get dad. Such is the case for me every. Darn. Year. Here’s the thing: My dad isn’t exactly one for “stuff.” He’s a voracious reader, but give him a piece of clothing or a watch and it won’t ever see the light of day. Seriously. I also didn’t want to resort to getting him yet another book, seeing as he practically owns the entirety of the True Crime and WWII sections at Indigo.
To make matters even more difficult, I also had a new father in mind: My brother, a newly-minted dad to an adorable (and incredibly chunky) 1-month old. So, I set off to find gifts for both my dad and bro, hoping that it wouldn’t come down to taking them out for brunch. Boooooring.
Luckily, Ford hit us up for an unforgettable Father’s Day experience. The 114 year old car company brought me and my fam out (yes, my mom came too!) to Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario—about 40 minutes south of Hamilton—to test drive some of their new rides out on the track. Given the rising interest in experience-based gifts over material items, the fact that my dad hates stuff, and my bro being a “gear-head,” this was basically the perfect Father’s Day gift.
We kicked things off with a chill (just kidding, we were going pretty fast!) drive around the park’s road course track for with our professional driver, Malcolm. Then the fun part: We got to hop into the driver’s seat ourselves to test out the cars. On the menu? The 2017 Mustang GT and 2017 Focus RS. The former, which so happens to be the best-selling sports car in the world, boasts a 5-litre V8 and 435 horsepower—which basically means it’s legit. The latter, part of Ford’s performance line, isn’t your average Focus hatchback: it features all-wheel drive, which keeps the car glued to the track, and an added turbo-charger which produces a whopping 350 horsepower. According to my brother, the Focus RS had “wicked handling,” meaning the more aggressive you drove, the better the car performed.
