Every designer denim brand is suddenly selling overalls. Jeremy Scott is decorating dresses, bags, sweaters and phone cases (pretty much anything else he can get his hands on) with cartoon characters. Alessandro Michele’s quirky mixed up prints are welcoming a whole host of young buyers to Gucci stores worldwide. The kiddie has gone chic.
But really, when was the last time you wore a peter pan collared dress? Mary Janes? A pretty hairband? Kids have their own fashion codes and there are certain details, pieces and prints that have always been associated with childhood – until now. The big bows, pinafores (remember those!), sailor-stripe lapels and onesies that resurfaced for spring are a far cry from OshKosh. Instead, they’ve been reimagined with luxe treatments like pastel gauze, leather smocking and in the case of Saint Laurent’s $1,600 denim overalls, a very adult price tag.
