Ivanka Trump is Shuttering Her Namesake Label
After months of companies like Hudson’s Bay and Nordstrom dropping her products from their shelves, Ivanka Trump has finally made the decision to shutter her namesake clothing brand.
“After 17 months in Washington, I do not know when or if I will ever return to the business, but I do know that my focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington,” she told reporters from the Wall Street Journal. “So making this decision now is the only fair outcome for my team and partners.”
Ivanka severed her ties to the business after ascending to work in her father’s White House administration in 2016, though she retained ownership interest in the company through a trust. However, after the election the Ivanka Trump label served as a lightning rod for criticism based on her father’s policy decisions. The Grab Your Wallet campaign, created by Shannon Coulter and Sue Atencio, urged consumers who disagree with Trump’s policies to boycott the line of corny party dresses and practical office pumps.
The boycott appeared to be successful, as the label began e-commerce operations to combat declining in-store sales earlier this year, and the retailers who dropped the label claimed the decision was based on “poor performance” rather than politics.
When Ivanka’s label was dropped by Nordstrom last year, the president tweeted: “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by Nordstrom. She is a great person—always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!”
On Tuesday morning, the brand’s president Abigail Klem informed the company’s 18 employees that operations would be shutting down. Ivanka herself will reportedly address the staff later today.
Considering how noxious the brand has become, we’re honestly surprised that it took this long.
