Jean Paul Gaultier Takes His Final Bow At Paris Couture Fashion Week
by Maddison GlendinningJean Paul Gaultier took his final bow presenting his last collection for his namesake maison last night. Announcing the news last week ahead of the show, he said in a tweet, “This show celebrating 50 years of my career will also be my last. But rest assured Haute Couture will continue with a new concept.” His final show was as spectacular as one would have hoped – fantastical looks (all 172 of them in total) that were quintessentially JPG floated down the runway on the likes of Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Dita Von Teese and Boy George. It was a celebration of fashion and fun, with a refreshingly diverse cast of models, perhaps his final lesson for his peers in the industry. In post-show interviews he also said that the show was his first “upcycled couture collection.”
Earlier in the week, Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri took her inspiration from ancient Greece for S/S20, and posed the question, “What if women ruled the world?” Liquid silk dresses walked the runway alongside soft tulle confections, all of which spoke to a highly feminine aesthetic. Over at Chanel, Virginie Viard recreated the garden at the Abbey of Aubazine, the orphanage where Coco Chanel spent many of her formative years. The resulting collection was full of monochromatic separates, schoolgirl-inspired dresses and Peter Pan collars. Plus, Lebanese designer Georges Hobeika delivered a collection full of red carpet-worthy designs, which we’re certain we’ll see IRL in the coming months.
