Kate Middleton wears Prabal Gurung! The royal tour of Southeast Asia is definitely off to a fashionable start

It’s only day one of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s royal tour of Southeast Asia but we’re already proclaiming the trip a fashion success. The Duchess debuted two new dresses today and oh, do they ever make up for the weeks and weeks of repeated Olympic items. First up: Will and Kate visited the Singapore Botanic Gardens to attend an orchid naming ceremony and visit an orchid that was named for Princess Diana prior to her death. Kate Middleton wore a pale-pink dress by Jenny Packham and, much to our delight, the dress featured an orchid print. Apparently she commissioned the custom design, and while the print isn’t an exact match for the “Vanda William Catherine” orchid—which is white with a spotty purple pattern—we have to admit it comes pretty close.
While Kate Middleton wearing Jenny Packham is nothing new, here’s something that is: Prabal Gurung. Yes, for dinner at the President of Singapore’s residence Kate Middleton wore a dress by Prabal Gurung—a perfect choice, considering the designer was born in Singapore. The purple and white dress is from Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 collection (do you think she snatched it up months ago in anticipation for this tour?) and while we’ve seen this silhouette many times before, the vibrant print is such a departure from Kate Middleton’s usual style. But, because she’s accessorized it with all the usual elements—black Prada heels, Anya Hindmarch clutch and bouncy curls—the Prabal Gurung dress looks totally Kate. (Just imagine how edgy she could have looked with sleek, straightened hair and a pair of strappy heels!) Speaking of imagining, we’re already curious as to what other designers and dresses Kate Middleton will debut over the next eight days. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
