Europe’s menswear’s designers must be tired of playing second fiddle to their womenswear counterparts. Several labels made bold strides this season by harnessing the power of social media and youth culture to show the world they want out of the backseat. With the fashion world turning to couture this week, we present 5 most memorable moments from the Fall 2017 menswear collections.
Logomania
In what can be viewed as a less NSFW callback to the infamous Spring 2003 Gucci Campaign wherein models had bikini waxes done in the shape of a G, Fendi had their name written into the freshly shorn heads of the models. The Italian brand had its iconic handwritten font stenciled just above the back of the neck, in shades of orange and yellow. This unique branding was in line with the playful and colourful collection that was presented by designer Silvia Venturini Fendi.
Social & Gabbana
The coolest millennials and hottest social media stars, including Austin Mahone, Cameron Dallas and Luka Sabbat, were all on hand for the Dolce & Gabbana runway presentation in Milan. It was a spectacular production that featured both men’s and women’s looks in a splashy setting. Several of the young men featured in the show, including Dallas, Gabriel Kane, and Jude Law’s son Rafferty, also star the latest Dolce & Gabbana as campaign, which was shot in Capri. Teens everywhere will want to start saving up to afford the clothes worn by their favourite social stars.
Haider Ackermann makes his debut at Berluti
Colombian designer Haider Ackermann has gained a devoted following for his effortless, and beautifully layered looks. After the departure of former designer Alessandro Sartori, Ackerman was named creative director for house of Berluti, best known for its handcrafted footwear. This appointment will finally give him the tools and resources needed for his designs to reach a worldwide audience. In his first collection for the brand, Ackerman showed his skill with colour combinations. It’s a perfect marriage; the luxurious textiles Berluti has become known for, matched with the elegance and ease of Ackerman’s designs. Berluti and Ackerman fans alike will be pleased.
Balenciaga Bros.
The American election captured global attention last year, and one of its breakout stars was undoubtedly Bernie Sanders. Although not particularly known for his style, his campaign proved inspirational for designer Demna Gvasalia. Gvasalia emblazoned the Balenciaga logo on coats, jackets, hoodies and scarves throughout the collection, in the style of Sanders’ campaign logo. Though Sanders failed to make it onto the Democratic ticket, his continued inspirational quest to create a better nation for future generations, will be the ultimate take away from this homage.
Louis The Skater Boy
The most talked about collection (images of which have already gone viral) was undoubtedly the Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration. Skate shop/clothing brand Supreme, which was founded in 1994, has a huge international following, and this partnership, will no doubt add to the brands cache. Made up mostly of accessories, featured items from the capsule collection include backpacks, wallets, fanny packs, scarves, and of course skateboards. The initial idea came about a year ago, after Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke casually inquired about getting in touch with the team from Supreme. After getting the request from Burke, Creative Director Kim Jones said he would put him in touch with his friend, Supreme founder James Jebbbia, as long as the CEO agreed to allow a collaboration. Expect to be on a long waitlist for these items, as they’ll be sure to sell out fast.
