Mad Hot Ballet 2015: Inside this year’s Venetian-themed gala, masked-dancers and all
When I visited Venice for one night only earlier this month, I thought it was an experience pretty singular to me. That was until Wednesday night, when the Four Seasons for the Performing Arts transformed into Italy’s most magical city for this year’s Mad Hot Ballet. The annual gala benefitting the National Ballet of Canada featured everything from sequin-wearing stilts walkers to masked dancers—theatrical nods to the night’s co-chair, M.A.C. Cosmetics founder Frank Toskan. The event featured performances by the company’s newest and oldest members, including the most recent Erik Bruhn Prize winner, 20-year-old Hannah Fischer, and principal dancer Sonia Rodriguez, who celebrates 25 years with the company this year.
The event also featured our annual best-dressed competition, during which EIC Bernadette Morra doled out the night’s biggest awards to Maggie Adamczenko, Athena Raymond, Kayleigh Fisher and 12-year-old Emma de Blois, who trooped through the event with one leg in a cast.
