Makeup Lovers are Freaking Out Over This Throwback Too Faced Photo
Too Faced’s Jerrod Blandino certainly knows how to keep us on our toes when it comes to the brand’s makeup launches.
Shortly after hinting at an upcoming highlighting palette (!!!), the cosmetics company’s co-founder and chief creative officer took to the ‘gram to show off Too Faced’s original lipsticks from the ’90s.
Created in 1998, the OG lippies came in eight different shades (that are totally in style now, BTW), all in an iridescent finish. Bustle notes the one shade that was missing in Jerrod’s video was a metallic silver named “Bionic.”
But what’s most noticeably different is the packaging — the sleek, black and silver bullet cases have since been replaced with brighter, yet more simplistic tubes.
Shortly after the throwback clip was posted, Too Faced fans flooded the comments section with speculation and hopes that the shades would be resurrected for Too Faced’s 20th anniversary in 2018.
Jarrod’s “nostalgic” feels post is most likely a hint of what to expect from the brand next year, or at least a feeler to see what the customer response would be. And truthfully, it wouldn’t be a bad idea — plenty of brands have seen success in bringing back old classics, often times in new and improved formulations.
Check out some of the most iconic beauty re-issues below.
Urban Decay Lipsticks
Urban Decay went through a major overhaul last year, ditching their entire lipstick collection for a newly revamped version in packaging that was a nod to its original ’90s casing. They also re-released nine of their original lipstick (and nail polish!) shades in celebration of their 20th anniversary.
Pat McGrath x Max Factor
Beauty fans went crazy last year when legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath announced should would be releasing a limited-edition capsule collection with Max Factor. The makeup brand, which pioneered many of the world’s most popular cosmetics including pressed powder and foundation, shut down in 2010 due to lack of sales, so this temporary revival was a beauty lover’s dream come true.
Essie Retro Revival
Essie also hopped aboard the relaunch train, releasing their limited-edition “Retro Revival” collection last year. The line, which featured six of the brand’s most popular discontinued shades from the past 35 years, included the cult fave “Starry Starry Night,” which was once sold on eBay for $240.
Jane Cosmetics
The beloved ’90s drugstore beauty brand got second life in 2013, After filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, beloved ’90s drugstore beauty brand Jane Cosmetics got second life in 2013, thanks to an acquisition by Patriarch Partners. The new line contains updated versions of former bestsellers, including liquid eyeliner, lipstick and matte foundation.
John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Salt Spray
One of the original sea salt hair sprays, John Frieda’s Beach Blonde Ocean Waves Spray was a cult fave in the ’90s. So when it disappeared from drugstore shelves, fans petitioned for it to make a comeback. Finally, in 2014 John Frieda took their customers’ advice, and brought back the famous spray, this time in a new and improved formulation, bottle and name.
M.A.C By Request
Another brand who takes their customers’ feedback seriously? MAC Cosmetics. In 2014, the brand announced its “By Request” collection, where fans could vote on their favourite discontinued shades, with the winning picks being reinstated for a limited time.
