Marimekko to Launch First Streetwear Collection Exclusively at Gravitypope

Finnish design brand Marimekko, known for its bold, floral prints, is expanding its offering to include streetwear for the first time. Called Marimekko Kioski, the new line will be available to buy across Canada, exclusively at Gravitypope, from today.

The collection is made up of a range of unisex items finished in the brand’s most recognizable prints in a colour palette of black, white, navy and red. Items in the collection include t-shirts, socks, handbags, sneakers, caps, hoodies and more. Prices begin at $25 for a scrunchie and go up to $375 for a hoodie.

According to a release from the brand, the collection hopes to “reinvigorate interest with a mainstream, urban audience.” Many of the pieces feature the brand’s signature Unikko poppy pattern which was first designed in 1964. Interestingly, the print was designed by artist Maija Isola after Marimekko’s founder, Armi Ratia, said the brand would never print a flower pattern. The print is representative of “creativity, strength, courage and faith in oneself,” says the brand.

Speaking with WWD, Satu Maaranen, said, “We feel that our playful prints are a perfect match with the creative streetwear culture. This collection introduces our art of print-making to a new generation of urban youth around the world with reinterpretations of our iconic patterns in new colourways and new applications. The collection is especially inspired by our iconic Unikko print that stands for creativity.”

Marimekko Kioski launches today and will be available in gravitypope stores in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto, as well as the brand’s e-commerce platform. In store, the items will be presented “kiosk-style” in keeping with the theme.
